The booking company through which we bought the ticket have a very poor reputation regarding this; so I was somewhat apprehensive, despite having used them for the last 10 years or so without any problem. Explained the situation, and after being put on hold for a couple of minutes whilst they went away to look at the T&Cs, came back to say we were eligible for a credit note, and after a minute or two received an e-mail of confirmation stating the value of the credit note, and giving a re-booking reference number.
So all well that ends well - but it did take a telephone call the US.
