Searching around for a Bach B Minor Mass that hit the spot, I settled on this.
Well paced, good soloists, lovely lucid sound quality - and a performance with soul not mere technical proficiency.
The only drawback on the Spotify playback, sadly a significant one, is that the tracks have no gaps between them so each section starts immediately the previous has finished.*

Now playing the surround SACD of West Side Story (the 'infamous' DG recording, which is my favourite)

Strongly recommended by Fanfare magazine, and I can hear why.
Personally I find these works a bit over-rich and cloying. OK for me limited to one per listening session, I tend to rebel when a 2nd one starts!

Arvo Part's 3rd symphony.
Written after the years-long sabbatical from composing when he gave up on the standard European avant-garde approach (thankfully :)) and started on his tintinnabula style of simpler (or simplistic, depending on your viewpoint :)) more minimalist music that has won him far wider appeal.
The 3rd shows hints of that style, but it does not dominate by any means.
It just provides a far more melodic and approachable work as far as I am concerned. In fact I think it is an excellent piece.
On this BIS recording you get to hear his earlier, avantgarde style, as well as the post-sabbatical 3rd symphony.

Mozart's perfect 25th symphony damn near perfectly performed by Josef Krips. Great sq, too. Recorded in the 1960s, I think. Shows the modern 'authentic instrument' brigade how it should be done in terms of nuanced delicacy and rhythmic lightness of touch.

Telemann's set of solo flute fantasias (about an hour long) are, for me, much more approachable when transcribed for oboe.
Excellent music, endlessly fascinating.
The Britten solo oboe suite is one of my favourite works by the composer.

Another great find. :) It's not an exaggeration to say that Spotify has transformed my musical listening and enjoyment, such a fantastic and easy way to explore new music.
The YOA Orchestra of the Americas, conducted Carlos Miguel Prieto. Musicians aged 18-30. They are superb in this Shostakovich 6th symphony!
It's a live recording, in the best and worst senses. Fantastic electricity and sense of excitement and involvement. Great sq, but the audience cough and shuffle their way through the performance quite audibly at times.
I can hardly wait to hear more recordings by these musicians, but I have to listen to this Shosty 6 just one more time. :)

A superb recording of Barber's Knoxville soprano and orchestra work.
No over-projecting operatic soprano here, Linda Hohenfeld's voice is pure simplicity itself, just right for the work imo. Beautifully recorded, too,

I'd be the first person to admit that I don't really 'get' Elgar's symphonies.
I don't get the way the themes are constructed, I don't get the way the music develops, I don't get the way it comes together as a coherent musical whole as to my ears they don't.
But they have a great reputation and I do enjoy many of the various bits of which the music is constructed.
(I have the same problem with the violin concerto, don't even get me started on the big choral works).
Every now and then I come back to the symphonies and try again with new or old recordings. I figure that maybe if I just persevered I can become a True Elgarian. So many people enjoy them greatly, I hate to think that I am missing out.
I may have finally struck paydirt in the 1st symphony.
One of the truly great world class orchestras has recorded the 1st symphony, and lord be praised I am really enjoying it!
What do you mean the Thuringen Philharmonie Suhl isn't a great world class orchestra?

It's probably brash and way too 'obvious' and lacking in Elgarian nobilmente for the true connasewer but it at last, finally, is allowing me to enjoy the music as a whole rather than as a series of disconnected bits.

Wow - I love this. I came across it doing a Spotify search on recordings by the RPO.
A superbly recorded Brahms symphony cycle from 2010 - I'd never heard of it.
Traditional 'Old fashioned approach' - in these days of authentic performance I guess it could be classified as naughty but nice. --it makes me think of Jochum's excellent EMI cycle in up to date sound.
I started with the 2nd symphony and just fell head over heels in love with it. Then the 3rd, now listening to the 4th.
The performances tend to go for architectural grandeur rather than febrile excitement.
