I thought I'd try Goodall's Ring Cycle in English and began with the Chandos CD set of Siegfried - an appalling, brightly lit CD that was painful to listen to, put me off for a while. I recently saw the whole EMI cycle on vinyl for sale on e-bay, a massy box comprising 20 LPs, and decided to buy...

Starting off this morning with Siegfried again, I'm not wholly convinced - it is so very peculiar to hear Wagner in English - but I will do my best to try to enter Goodall's world and see what happens over time.

Back to Saint Saens' 2nd piano concerto - again! It's fast becoming my favourite.
This one a superb performance by Dubravka Tomsic with Anton Nanut doing his usual superb conducting. :)
It's probably sexist to say this, but Tomsic plays like a man here. Immensely powerful and bold playing where required.

It's no exaggeration to say that Spotify has revolutionised the way I listen to music.
Such a vast catalogue just a few clicks away. And the search engine facilities are quirky enough to throw up all sorts of interesting surprises, which is a great way to explore new music and new performances.
As for the expense, it is saving me £hundreds a year!
I used to budget (and spend) £50 a month on new CDs - often enough used ones from Amazon, so I got quite a lot, but still £50/month.
I now spend £10 a month on Spotify and barely any on CDs.
Win !! :yay:
Everyone has their own way of budgeting for the hobby, but Spotify works for me.

Just been looking at prices for the Bernstein Mahler 9th on Amazon and eBay -- crazy !! CDs start at over £20 used, and the LPs seem to sell for £100s. :scratch:

the whole lot reissued can be got with some songs in a box for reasonable amounts so why they go for so much I dont know :scratch:
I like this.
I suspect that if it had the name Beethoven at the top of the manuscript with an early opus number then these pieces, and this composer, would be far more solidly based in the standard repertoire.
The violin sonata is a particular standout for me.

Doing a search on Spotify of Beethoven piano sonatas I came across a full set by Maria Grinberg on the Melodiya label.
I'd never heard of her, but Melodiya issuing a full set - from the land where jaw droppingly wonderful pianists are 3 a penny? Must be something of interest.
Well, from the first few notes of Op 110 it was obvious that I was in the presence of a master pianist. Just stunningly right.
She had a hard life - her husband and her father arrested by the Stalinist authorities and murdered as "enemies of the people", losing her conservatory post she occasionally played tympani for an amateur choreography group ... sheesh ... but somehow after a while she regained roles as solo pianist.

This sonata set recorded around 1970. The sonatas I have heard so far (110 & 111) are just wonderful.

I've not heard Collins' Sibelius before, and it is very impressive. Listened to the 3rd yesterday.
A very old mono LP - maybe 60+ years old. It looks a bit cloudy and blemished but amazingly it plays near perfectly.
The whole Collins symphony cycle is available on Spotify, but I can't resist keeping this LP!
And this LP will be up for sale.
I got really excited when I first saw it - Nimbus 45rpm LP. :eek: But I'm not convinced the music is for me.

Nino Rota is well known for his film music, but I was muchly impressed by his cello concertos and, especially, his 1st and 2nd symphonies. A definite nobility to the symphonies.

Interesting performance of the Scottish symphony by Fey. Very energetic and sprightly, and he has a way of bringing out the brass lines which are usually rather buried in the mix; makes it very exciting and surprising at times.

The early sonata is pretty good, but Schubert was just a lad then.
The Wanderer fantasy is a piece I hate. Loathsome and crass ( coarse; crude; unrefined or insensitive). Tub thumping at its worst. Maybe it's just me. :)

This is the first time I've positively enjoyed a Stenhammar symphony!
Previous listens, to other recordings, have felt a bit meh. But this one captured my interest.
Maybe it was my mood, maybe it really is a bit special.

Hugely impressed by Andrew Litton here, both as pianist and conductor. Great performances of the concerto and symphony. The slow mvt of the concerto is just stunningly beautiful with Litton.

Some really excellent sections where Furtwangler hits the groove, and then he meanders along for a while and then you get another good bit.

I really enjoyed the 2nd trio on this album.
There's a jauntiness that shows the players are enjoying themselves with this wonderful music and makes it fun as well as sublime. Other performers seem over-serious and staid - that doesn't work for me.

Coo - I really liked two of these symphonies!
6 & 5 - not quite so keen on 19 although it is impressive.
Both earlier works are choral/vocal to an extent - and the pure simplicity of the vocal line, beautiful in itself, is in fascinating contrast to the often bold and majestic orchestral music.
