I know, and agree... However, those huge straight roads, which often seem to go on forever into the horizon, are also a hoot - as long as you watch out for the speed traps! ;)

If you are caught at or above 30 km/h over the limit and they will confiscate your license.
Not so much fun when you know this.
Yeah, you need to be careful, especially going through villages, where it is strictly 50km/h, but the open, super-smooth and largely empty roads one finds in rural France, are still simply a joy to drive on :)

I live near lots of the roads you describe, and can often be seen with a large grin on my face.
I have a few routes, depending on how much time I have available.

Kudos to the new Skoda Superb, we hadn't an ache or pain between the 4 of us and we got 53 mpg despite cruising at 90mph the whole way where possible.
Adaptive cruise control was excellent and the sat nav rerouted us twice to avoid traffic jam and road closure which helped.

A history of the land speed record. Was shown on TV a while back, but well worth another look. I really enjoyed it. Especially with the sound up and using full screen.
Having suffered way too many annoying scrapes and dents with previous cars in London I now do without whilst one of these (apologies for the promo shot, never bothered taking any) resides in an climate controlled garage in what used to be the family home, now mine , in the Lake District. Only managed to take her out for a spin on a handfull of occasions thus far.

The Brabster's going like a bomb now, since its remap and new performance quad exhaust system - quite amazing what Kevin (my mechanic) has gotten out of the engine, in terms of torque and power curves :eek:
