I have the book here somewhere although a long time since I read it. I just thought it was an attempt to make some mundane processes into more than the sum of their parts. Seems to be a common criticism, see Dawkins, Tyrrell et al.

High host population density = greater chance of disease transmission = more opportunity for "variants" occurring = lower host population density
