Duke Ellington and his Orchestra..Will big Bands Ever Come Back?

It’s a long long time since big bands were “ the thing”.
Their day was the 30s to the 50s.
Then, they were the dance music of their time. They were what folks used to listen to. Dance halls with a big band were where most people went.
Then rock and roll, then pop came along, and big bands went out of fashion. This from the 60s onwards.
Then the idiom for big bands was jazz. Ellington, Basie, Rich etc etc.
It’s funny. It used to be that musicians earned their living in big bands, and played a bit of jazz afterwards .
Nowadays, it’s the other way around. Most jazzers make a fortune improvising ( ahem ! ) and play in big bands for fun.
They are everywhere, and I could go to see one any night I wished. Amateur / semi pro.
There are no full time big bands now. But what there are ( I’m talking in this country ) , fall in to tw9 types.
1) those who play the music of the past . There are a few of them.
2) those who play original/ contemporary music. The pro level versions can be great, but are limited in their gigs. It’s very hard to pay 18 pros a decent wage to get them to tour, for example. Audience numbers just can’t cover it.
So, they rely on Arts Council funding to enable tours.
It’s a hard game.
But if you hear a really great big band, with great arrangements, there is nothing like it. IMHO
So, in my view, the answer to your question is that they have never gone away, but will never be “ back” to where they were.
Indeed. It was an odd title. Reasonable album tho
