Must admit that I don't have the patience for them.

Some of them can be stunning (making the mono thing completely insignificant), including that one!
RCA Red Seal recordings/pressings are always sonically amazing (using top-notch valve recording equipment throughout, microphones, mixing desks, etc), and the musical excellence of the Beethoven piece in question speaks for itself :)

Good all-rounder, and I do like the 3rd symphony, it's got a bit more meat on the bones than his shorter pieces.

Picked up in a charity shop for 50p so I thought it was worth a go.
A bit new-agey, but decently listenable for the most part.
Quite plausible as film music for a rather slushy blockbuster.

Fancied a Dvorak violin concerto yesterday, not something that gets played chez-Jerry very much. Loads of modern versions! - sampled a few, then settled on Vengerov. He makes much more of it than most, imo.

Critically mauled, but I really like Venzago's Bruckner. He just sounds right to me, even if everyone else disagrees!

Weird avantgarde shit is happily absent, Hillborg seems comfortable with tonality, just it's of the 21stC kind - lots of interesting things going on, very varied. Long lines - he has an attention span longer than many composers seem to have these days.
Consider me a bit of a Hillborg fanboy. :)

The opening track is remarkably like the start of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. It must be intentional.
... the problem is that it lasts for nearly half an hour. IgorS knew that he had to move on after a few minutes. OK, to be fair, there is some development and variety, and things do hot up after 20 minutes. Some tonalities and glissandi are very like Gloria Coates' music (which is a good thing!).

Franz Clement wrote his violin concerto a year before Beethoven wrote his own, and he commissioned and was the soloist in the 1st performance of the Beethoven concerto.
I've listened to the Clement concerto 3 times now, and each time it sounds increasingly like Beethoven just copied it and extended the ideas / emboldened it to create his own concerto! Astonishingly alike in places. Yup, plagiarism was alive and well back then, and Beethoven was not above a bit of borrowing. :eek:

Got home yesterday fancying some Beethoven violin sonatas, as one does.
For some reason my usual favourites did not satisfy; Nishizaki / Jando , Hudson / Verney. :(
Tried Kavakos, Menuhin, Stern, Perlman, Kremer, Kashimoto, Heifetz, Szeryng :nono:
Finally getting somewhere ... Imberger / Korstick were excellent, but didn't quite hold my attention for long.

In the end only Zukerman hit the spot ...
Barenboim as pianist was slightly preferred, but the tubby piano sound didn't suit.
Neikrug had the better piano recording, if not quite as imaginative playing as Barenboim.
So settled in, finally, to several sonatas from this set -->
