Had my 1970 Submariner serviced last year to give to my Son, total cost plus a free evaluation was £2200.

Hadn't thought about it previously but he now has the cost of insuring the bloody thing.

Rolex have long had veblen status, which means people expect them to be expensive, including the servicing.

Obviously one expects a mechanical watch to be expensive to make, especially one that keeps time accurate enough to be accorded chronometer status, but in the last ten years or so prices charged by Rolex have become absurd.

The trouble is that anyone with enough money: rock stars; TV personalities; professional sports players, etc. now automatically think of Rolex when choosing a watch.

Most models fetch more than retail second hand because they’re very difficult to buy new but things aren’t as crazy as they were when a £5k Oyster perpetual was fetching £30k because it was Tiffany blue.

All those marques are too exclusive even for me Barry.

Are those marques I mentioned ever subject to forgeries, or is it only Rolex?
