Yeh just don't expect to buy one plug it in & sound good.You also have the socketry to contend with on the back aswell.

My recent purchase of a pair of DM2a's turns out not be such a good deal. Both Coles are stuffed and one of the woofers rattles. Seller being a bit arsey about returning them. Four pairs were probably too many anyway. I did fancy a veneered fronted pair though.

Falcon Acoustics are selling new Coles '4001G' Tweeters. What do you mean about rattling woofer?

I've got a spare set, but £74 is too much for a pair with blown Coles. I was thinking £20 would be more appropriate. What do you think?
When I had them hooked up yesterday I could sometimes hear a bit of a rattle. When I took the fronts off to measure the drivers I noticed that when you tap the magnet of the woofer it sounds as though something is loose.

I don't know about a Rattle but i had rubbing sound that went away by unbolting the unit turning it 180 degrees, bolt it back up..

It's definitely not rubbing. There just seems to be something loose in one woofer. If you turn the volume up it vibrates along with the music.
How much would a pair with 2 Coles and woofer needing replacement be worth?

When I had the fronts off it only happened when I tapped the magnet. Just waiting of the seller to get back to me. I've told him they are only worth £20 to me.
Not the end of the world if they go back and I get refunded. I should be saving for a new preamp and an rcm.

Bugger! I sold four off new, unused, Coles 4001 tweeters (15 Ohm versions) to a 'new' member about a year ago for £15 each. Never heard from him again!

Would have much preferred to have sold a couple to you. But you probably don't wan't to hear that.

Good to know that the Coles are still available - and actually £74 is a reasonable price for a pair.

Just got a response from the seller to say that he will offer me £30 as half the cost of a used pair of Coles off ebay. Then went on to say that I might have swapped them for faulty ones.
Shouldn't have paid cash for stuff on ebay I suppose. Would've been a bit easier with Paypal. He lives just round the corner from my parents so I might nip round and have a quiet word this weekend.

If I end up keeping them I'll investigate further. He wouldn't do any more than offer a £30 refund so I've opened a case with ebay. Not hoping for much as I paid cash, but I'll see what I can do. He's now told me I could have swapped a faulty pair of Coles in. Silly twat.

I bought an immaculate looking pair of DM2a's and both Coles supertweeters were of no use. I did not even bother to get back to the seller. Probably to him the speakers worked fine. You are unluckier, having a faulty bass unit as well.

I tend to think that the midrange of the DM4 is slightly more detailed than the DM2a's.

Have been wanting to try the DM4 bass unit and crossover in the DM2a, but not got round to it.

I haven't yet heard a pair of DM4's. I would guess that the Dm2's have a better bass. How do they compare, in your opinion, to other speakers using the Celestion/Coles combination?

I prefer the DM4's to Spendor BC1's, bass better controlled and to me, a less coloured midrange. Bass is not too bad, DM2/DM2a's go down lower. But the DM4 is a nice size and compromise.

The DM2's are quite big lumps in my small living room, which is at a guess 5x4m. But they sound bloody good and there's no wife to be complaining about them.
They are sat on a pair of Target R2's which seem to work well with them.
I've got an idea to replace the binding posts and renew the crossover caps in one of the pairs as an experiment.

I have never found an out of spec capacitor in DM1, DM2, DM2a, DM3, DM4, DM5 all of which I have and several pairs of some. The inductors are of good quality and as long as the connections to the binding post are clean and tight, nothing wrong with them either.

Some other B&W speakers use reversible electrolytic capacitors, those will probably need replacing, certainly if over 10 years old.

One other thought, the HF1300 level selector switch contacts on the DM2a's can sometimes benefit from the use off a little good switch cleaner/ lubricant such as Servisol Super 10. The two switches on the DM3 also.

The crossovers on my scruffy, just for spares, DM2's have DM2a written on the crossover, but have no switch. I was thinking of using them. Alternatively I could just bypass the switch, as I have it in the middle position.
I think the pre-amp maybe the weak link in the system at the moment. So that might be sorted before playing around with anything else.
And I've got to finish off my tt power supply.

There were some strange mixes of DM2 and DM2a. I have two pairs of DM2a's that are marked DM2 on the back, but have the DM2a switch and came with DM2a instruction booklets.

The crossovers for the speakers with the switch and without the switch slightly are different. There are some component value changes. Also the HF1300 is connected electrically in phase in one, but out of phase in the other. Forget which is which, would have to check the circuit diagrams.

I have recently give a pair of DM2's (no 1300 level) switch to a good friend. He is delighted with the sound of them. He also has Quad ESL63's, Tannoy Chatsworths, some AR's (forget which) Small vintage MS and several others. Incidentally, his dad was Technical Manager at Vitavox.

Not eBay but my local cash converters has two technics SL1210 mk2's for £145 each. No cartridge. I know nothing more than that I'm afraid.

these speakers seem to be going up in price recently. A pair of nice Lancasters with 15" MGs sold for £2100 on eBay the other day so I'd say it's a cheap price to be honest and a bargain for someone.

Ok they were 15's but the 12's are also very good indeed and in fact better sounding than 15's in the Lancaster cabs..

For your information I use some of her earlier recordings as test files. The detail and depth in them is an indication that a good studio and recording/engineering team was used.

One of the best sounding receivers I have ever heard and owned is the ROTEL RX-1603. I think I even got the service manual.
A massive beast as well. Mine got damaged by an over eager visitor. I offered it to anyone who could lift it with one hand, but nobody ever managed.
The last one I saw on eBay went for nearly three times the price on eBay.

Wow, that must be one heavy beast. I know i can (when my back is in as good an order as it can get) lift & carry 10st without too much bother with both arms. I wouldn't attempt more than a couple right now though :nono:

No not a single Manilow, no James Last, Klaus Wunderlich or Celine Dion either. I had no real idea of what was in there when I bid but it could have been a lot worse, but it was a bit of a 'his & hers' selection. I'll be keeping about half of them (his, I expect) & I think I'll be offering a few to AoS members in a short while.
