Not cheap, but this would outperform many so-called 'audiophile' pre/power amps, at twice the price and more - plus the GORGEOUS VU meters are a bonus:

I've heard this combo, and it sounds stunning!
Marco.
Looks cool!

You always see crazy money being asked for that combo, I've no idea if they fetch it or not. IIRC the reviewers liked the pre-amp when in battery mode but the power amp on its own was a bit 'meh' and of average build quality. If I wanted a pre-power and had the thick end of three grand to spend I don't think that is where I would go.
Seen them a lot cheaper.
I know where you're coming from, but trust me, forget what the reviewers say. UK reviewers are often biased against Jap gear. I've heard that combination in a friend's system (one I know intimately well), and it sounded stunning. You know I'm not easily impressed. It's also much better made than is often suggested.
Sonically, however, it's certainly worth the money being asked, and IMO would comfortably compete with anything being made today at that price, and perhaps beyond.
Marco.
As so often with Technics, wasn't there a much cheaper lookalike, very slightly different model number?
Three grand though. A grand more than an EAR 899 goes for second hand. I know which I would rather have (by a country mile).
EDIT - like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TECHNICS-S...UAAOSw-zxWmmli
There was a whole range of them I think.
