I've been a Rush fan from the very late 70's and my first exposure to the band was listening to Tommy Vance's Friday Night Rock Show on BBC Radio. That first track I remember is "A passage To Bangkok" from what is probably their most well known album "2112". This led to exploring their whole back catalogue and the purchase of the newly released "Permanent Waves" album containing the iconic track "Spirit of Radio". Now I can say I drifted away from Rush as their sound moved to more synth led exploits but came back to the fold as did many with the release of "Roll The Bones" in 1991. What can not be denied is the extraordinary musicianship of all three members the vastly underrated guitar of Alex Lifeson the hugely influential bass of Geddy Lee and of course his vocal abilities and yes of course the outstanding abilities of the late and greatly missed Neil Peart whose drumming will forever be considered as one of, if not the greatest, of all time. Now for where this really started, Spinning Today, I have been playing all of the 40th Anniversary CD's having been disappointed with the sound of the Mercury Remasters series, which are a poor representation of the sound from vinyl, being on the whole lacking in musicality and sounding somewhat relentless ! I am pleased to say the 40th Anniversary versions, remastered in 2015 are a welcome return to the sound heard on vinyl. If you have nothing of Rush then I would start with "Moving Pictures" if you've heard "2112" and liked it then "A Farewell To Kings" and "Hemispheres" are more in the same "prog rock" vein, whereas, "Permanent Waves" is more out and out rock. I have all the studio albums and most of the live albums too; for me their earlier work up to "Signals" in 1982 is probably my favourite period but make no mistake there are stand out tracks across their entire catalogue and no rock collection can be complete without at least one Rush album, after all there are 19 studio albums to choose from, 11 live albums (DVD etc) and 11 compilation albums. As for live, I saw them in 1982 on Moving Pictures tour and again in 2008 on the R30 tour and both times they were brilliant.

Having been into rock, metal, punk, funk and disco (amongst other stuff) all my life, I have to say, if their is one band I could never get into, its Rush :-(. It is simply because of the singers voice - I could never gel with it but, one thing I would say is, their musicianship is SECOND TO NONE and especially the drumming of Neil Peart!!! I'm going to say one thing that is a total contradiction to what I have just said previously - I do quite like the Permanent Waves album?????
