Yes, he is loved by many,and not so loved by many too.
Back in the 80s and probably early 90s I saw him dozens of times, with various groups. Loved his music, and his playing in particular, every time.
Bought many of his Lps. Etc etc.
Then my tastes kind of changed, into earlier jazz. (50s mainly.)
But I would still hear him from time to time. I enjoyed his stuff with Hilliard ensemble, for example.
Then a few years ago I saw he was playing in Edinburgh, which is where I used to live, and see him, all those years ago. I decided to revisit, bought a not inexpensive ticket, and made the long track to the frozen north ( it was July )
I was so disappointed and actually walked out long before the end. Not exactly sure why, but I couldn’t get in to it at all.
But Ive listened again (3 times ) to “Your Song” this morning, and reminded myself why I loved his playing.
It’s basically the tone he gets on soprano. So emotional. It’s kind of singing but crying at the same time. Loving it.
