I actually can’t time travel back to 1984 without including this one.
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Junk Culture (1984)

This album holds a unique honour in my collection - it is the only one I have bought new in 3 different formats. Originally I bought it on cassette - possibly the only album I have ever bought when it came out on tape, for the sole reason that we were about to go on a school geography trip for a week to the Lake District.
Even then I couldn’t face the thought of a week without music! I couldn’t afford a Sony Walkman so made do with a Sansui knock off and bought this album. I also made some copies of other albums and compilations using my dad’s Ferguson sound system, so looking back I don’t know why I didn’t buy it on vinyl and copy it, but there you go.
I did subsequently acquire a vinyl copy, and then when I finally accepted CDs were “the future” this was one of the hundreds of albums that got an “upgrade”.
The school trip to the Lakes was fairly uneventful except I was the one who was picked to go into an off licence in Kendal to buy Woodpecker cider and fags as I looked one of the oldest of our motley crew of 15 year olds. Illicit goods were acquired without a hitch or question, and
maybe my heroics was what attracted Amanda to me, who I subsequently “got off” with - but don’t worry, no baked beans or other canned goods were harmed in the making of that brief relationship!
