Sounds like the arm itself is not earthed properly.
Do you have a continuity tester? If so, check the continuity of the arm metalwork (say at the headshell, not at the base) with the earth lead that plugs into the arm base.

The PO of the arm says it shouldn't need earthing - but if I touch the arm the hum does god down a lot.Quote:

Ah - there lays the problem. The arm/headshell needs to be earthed. You could do this via the unipivot, but you would need to continue the earthing along to the arm and headshell, as well as connecting an earth lead to the arm's unipivot base.Quote:
