As around the sun the earth knows she’s revolving, and the rose buds know to bloom in early may, just as hate knows love’s the cure you can rest your mind assure that I’ll be loving you always…
Stevie wonder…
Jon Hendricks wrote some fantastically clever and witty lyrics to many of Theolonius Monk's tunes which can be heard on Carmen Sings Monk. It's a nice album on it's own, by Carmen McRae, especially the live in a hall ones for transparency and atmosphere.
Billy Strayhorn's lyrics to "Lush Life" are like a fine impressionist. Especially when you understand that he was only 18 years old when he wrote them. No way, you'll be saying out loud, where did he get this from?
'Debris' - The Faces from 'A Nod's as Good as a Wink'
It was written by Ronnie Lane about his father.
I left you on the Debris
At the Sunday morning market
You were sorting through the odds and ends.
You was looking for a bargain
I heard your footsteps at the front door,
And that old familiar love song,
Cause you knew you'd find me waiting there
At the top of the stairs.
I went there and back
Just to see how far it was
And you, you tried to tell me
But I had to learn for myself.
Theres more trouble at the depot,
With the general workers union
And you said, "They'll never change a thing.
Well, they won't fight and their not working."
Oh you was my hero
How you are my good friend
I've been there and back
And I know how far it is
But I left you on the Debris
Now we both know you got no money.
And I wonder what you would have done
Without me hanging around.
Beautiful guitar playing too..........a track for my desert island, I think.
ROLLING STONES - MEMO FROM TURNER
You're a lashing, smashing hunk of man, your sweat shines sweet and strong
Your organ's working perfectly but there's a part that's screwed on wrong
'If Jesus came to Earth today
They'd crucify him straightaway
Upon a cross of mdf
And they'd use 'No Need For Nails'
'Upon Westminster Bridge', Half Man, Half Biscuit
saw that half man half biscuit post, and couldn't resist throwing in a couple of my favourites:
The horrible sincerity of Miriam Stoppard, makes me want to go out and commit mass murder'
HMHB - Architecture and Morality; Ted and Alice
I shout all my obscenities from steeples,
but please dont label me a madman,
I'm off to see the Bootleg Beatles,
as the bootleg Mark Chapman,
Cafe bars, idiots and pigeons,
There's far too many in this town,
so me and the ombudsman,
are gonna do what we can,
when the evening sun goes down.
HMHB - When The Evening Sun Goes Down
'Neil Morrissey's a knobhead'
HMHB, 'Bottleneck at Capel Curig'
