What happened to canvas awnings outside of shops?
Was looking at an old postcard (from about 1910) of a street near to me the other day, all the shops had awnings unfolded. Walked down there on my way back from work tonight, the buildings are still there and mostly look identical, but the awnings and the metal apparatus for opening them are all gone except for one.
Seem to recall as a child in the 1970s that most shops still had and used their awnings, not sure when this stopped or why?

The steel roller shutters now fit where the awnings went. Sign of the times!
Had a paramotor flight this afternoon, t'was a bit cold but it gives such a buzz.
Followed by a nice real ale once home, fab.

Icy wind here although air temp is 7c in afternoon. Doubt anyone would have fancied a open plane far less a paramotor up here
I was well wrapped up, 2 pairs of socks, long johns, 2 pairs of support tights (with waterproof gusset), jogging bottoms (double insulated), extra-absorbency incontinence knickers, T shirt, padded sports bra, and 2 ladies jumpers (in 'midnight blue'), plus windproof gilet topped off by a full flying suit, lightly soiled :eek:Quote:

I got a new Zanussi integrated fridge/freezer this week to replace the malfunctioning Smeg unit. Bloody lovely to have nice cold stuff again and not to be throwing food out after a couple of days. The advice I can pass on is don't buy an expensive Smeg fridge, they are rubbish, even the engineer who came out to look at it said as much. Would have cost almost four times what the Zanussi cost ( sorry Marco I know they are Italian lol ).
