That's brilliant Mike, how lucky to be able to go with your granddaughter - I'm really looking forward to The Obyssey too, my nephew is almost beyond himself with excitement about it and he's 55!

I saw Godzilla Minus One so will see the sequel, the first one was extraordinary for a film made for less than $10million. I'm really looking forward to Dune: Part Three as well. There's a new Ridley Scott in August (The Dog Stars), but personally I think Ridley is getting a tad past his sell by date - I'll still see it though.

It will be interesting to see how they treat Homer's poem. I hope there is only a minimum amount of CGI, and they don't dumb it down, Hollywood style.

It's a Christopher Nolan film Barry, he gets to make exactly the film he wants, one of very few auteurs these days who have complete autonomy over their artistic choices.

Compare Nolan's Dunkirk (2017) to Leslie Norman's 1958 version - it's a classic example of just how the level of talent and ability has declined in the past 50 years. Most of the critics didn't seem to notice but then they've probably never heard of the 1958 film let alone seen it.

1958 version cost £400,000 and looks epic with hundreds of extras in the beach scenes. The 2017 Nolan version cost over 100 million but looks like it was made for ten bob on Clacton sands with half a dozen blokes and a dog. Plus some cartoony-looking CGI thrown in for good measure.

So I don't have high hopes for 'The Odyssey' at all.

An interesting parallel might be the two versions of "Murder on the Orient Express'. The first, made in 1974 and directed by Sidney Lumet, with Albert Finney as Poirot, stuck closely to the book, and IMO was an excellent film. :)

Whereas the second version, made in 2017 and directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also payed the part of Poirot deviated significantly from the book, and was IMO a complete disaster! :(

I really enjoy Christopher Nolan's films, seen them all, most multiple times, including Following which he filmed himself on the weekends using 16mm black and white film.

I haven't disliked any of his films so far, so I have high hopes for The Odyssey.

That's a comparison I've never heard before, ten bob and a dog . . . classic, can't say I agree mind you, but it did make me laugh. Maybe seeing it on a dual 4k projector SuperScreen with thunderous audio made for a better experience? I thought it was great :)

I love going to the cinema during the daytime when very few people are around. Not simply for the quiet but it's like you're going through a portal to another world, away from the bustle and light into a cocoon. Last year my wife and I were in Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast which, although it's tiny, has an independent cinema. Lo and behold they had a matinee of The Dambusters so even though we must've seen it a gazillion times on TV in our younger days we popped in. Along with a grand total of six other people we had a lovely afternoon (but also a thought-provoking one given the story). Simple pleasures.

I tend not to anticipate a particular new film, but just to go in on spec.

Not seen all his films, I thought Interstellar was okay but Inception was terrible.

If you haven't seen the 1958 Dunkirk I highly recommend it. I saw the Nolan version when it came on TV and knew little about it other than it was critically acclaimed. I assumed it was a made for TV BBC co-production done on the cheap and I thought it okay by that measure. Only later discovered it was a big budget film. Where did all that money go?

I have 55'' TV and stereo sound (NAD plus three-way B&O speakers) so not the worst set up ever. Maybe it would be better on the big screen but then never seen the '58 version on the big screen either so a fair comparison in my book.

That's when I go Pete, for those exact same reasons - I probably see 95% of my films before 7pm, most mid-afternoon. Watching a film on a TV really dilutes the experience. Nothing quite like the immersion of a dark room, big screen and full on audio. I saw Denis Villeneuve being interviewed once, he said watching event films at home on a TV was like using a speed boat in a bath . . . I agree.

I'm very fortunate though, I volunteer at an Arts Centre so seeing films on the big screen costs me nothing except my time.

I have seen it Martin, a couple of times and really enjoyed it. But I've never compared the two because they are such a different experience, each having their own merits. The time element of Nolan's work is what I find so intriguing, nobody else does that - the way his Dunkirk unfolds and overlaps I found masterful. The only thing I didn't like was Kenneth Branagh . . . he makes my teeth itch.

One thing about Nolan and you may disagree, I find his 'time puzzle films' need repeat viewings to fully unravel them. One viewing often leaves most people underwhelmed, they are complex by design, Inception especially gets panned on a single viewing. But when you get inside it, it's exceptional cinema IMO. I've seen it probably 6 or 7 times now, 2 in the cinema.
