Yup, they are a little too big... TBH, if I could land a nice minty pair of 1960s Maxims for around £300, as Adam has outlined (or less), I'd be well happy! :)

I was working in Marble Arch Camera Exchange/Sound Centre when those Maxims came out and I remember thinking to myself that I'd like to have a pair of they.
Cant believe the price they're fetching now.
Can't remember how much they were then but for comparison we were selling Quad 33/303 for £99.95 the pair.
Obviously it was just post decimilisation.
Tony McPhee used to pop in for a particular 8" speaker every now and then because he used to keep popping them in his system.

This is something that i like the look of but not at this price, this is just a pre amp and not the power amp as seen at Scalford and sounding very good by the way, and we are not sure where he gets the idea it's a 5-10 Mullard circuit as they use EL 84's.

I had a pair of the Maxims about ages ago and they certainly are amazing little speakers. The bass from the long throw drivers with huge alnico magnets is very impressive for their size. The HF cone tweeter is not bad but not up to madern standards.

They are reasonably easy to drive but like BC1's, the voice coils are prone to burn out if abused.

Should have kept mine as they were absolutely mint with matching amp and tuner but was offered £650 for the set and was tempted.

They are definitely more enjoyable than LS3/5a's.
