Horrible film, saw it on channel four a year or so ago, yuck. It was like a car crash one shouldn't look but one does. The inner plot does raise it above similar films but, getting there is a very nasty journey.Quote:

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin are ageing mobsters approaching the end of the line. Sounds like it should be a classic - a sort of geriatric 'Mean Streets' - but ends up as less than the sum of its parts. A buddy movie like this really needs some great dialogue from a Mamet or a Tarantino but it isn't on offer and the film can't decide if it is a comedy or a serious character piece. The glossy production kills the mood, as does the upbeat and intrusive soundtrack. Watchable for the performances, which are excellent, but that's about it. A massive lost opportunity.
:doh: I hate films with gratuitous violence and torture films like this and others, which seem to be only interested in shocking the watcher aren't for me but Martyrs does have a few interesting elements but I wouldn't want to see it again.Quote:

Ive never been into gore. Especially for gore's sake. Much prefer a well made film or a bawdy comedy like carry ons...I understand where your coming from though. My son used to love that stuff too
Yes, there's got to be a decent story, too. It's not so much the gore I like, but the psychologically disturbing parts of the story that are responsible for creating it. Essentially, it's how sometimes innocuous everyday situations are portrayed in a deeply macabre/nightmare-inducing way - and I love that.
For example, next time I'm alone on an underground train at night (if it ever happens), I'll be thinking about 'The Midnight Meat Train'.... *That* is the scary bit. The gore itself, for me (as it's not real), is just pure comedy.

Just watched the first episode of Narcos on Netflix, very promising.
