Some relative of the wife gave her a video of their wedding. Turned out to be a porn tape of her and her husband [emoji23] think I've still got it.. Ha ha. She never spoke to us again.
My brother's wedding was a full traditional Jewish service. I'd never seen one let alone attended but it was a beautiful event, quite different. The closest relatives of the bride and groom stand under the Hoopa, a canopy symbolising a tent, with the bride and groom and the Rabbi. A lot of the service was in Hebrew and there was a traditional choir. Even as a non Jew I was welcomed and made to feel comfortable and involved.
The only problem was it was a really hot day and the temperature in the synagogue was like the surface of the sun. I almost passed out a couple of times and it was a great relief to sit down after the 45 minute service, also to have a quick smoke with the Rabbi on the quiet.
One of the most interesting and enjoyable wedding I have attended was that of an Indian work colleague of mine who had the full Hindu ceremony.
There were probably well over 200 people there, but what surprised me at the time was that only the immediate family members actually took part in the ceremony. Everyone else was busy talking, catching up with the news, gossiping and probably doing business. The children were running around and playing games. Thinking about it, I shouldn't have been that surprised as in India (and in Africa), weddings and funerals are big occasions. People come from miles around, sometimes travelling for a few days to get there, so when they congregate they also take the opportunity to catch up on the news.
The opportunity to have a slap up meal is another draw - and needless to say, the reception at this particular wedding was excellent.
Now I think about it, it wasn't my brother's friend, it was my dad. So the tape will have been lying around the place till my brother and his new wife got back from their honeymoon. The year was 1981, there were only 3 TV channels, and no catch-up. So at least they got to watch the Corrie they missed while on holiday :)Quote:
