The machining time for Panzerholz is epic, so don't expect that option to be cheap. I'd go for a material that's naturally well damped and acoustically homegenous in all directions, which means that energy is dissipated consistetnly, rather than being reflected between layers. My recommendation? Chipboard - people tend to sneer at chipboard, but it's actually a nice material in the acoustic sense (not to be confused with MDF).

Yeah I guess Panzerholz would be expensive but I see as my final destination, I've looked long and hard at various designs materials and I think this could be what I'm looking for. My other alternatives are Bentonite which is even more expensive or even a sandwhich or differing materials i.e. Panzerholz+Aluminium which would probably be even more expensive. So, it's a compromise bewteen cost and accepting a small decrease in material performance. I've still got the rest of the valve system to pay for. :(

Heavily contemplating a Bob Cusworth plinth. Just had a pretty in depth chat and this could be the 301s final plinth and my Birthday pressie for this year. :D
Panzerholz is not that difficult to work with , given proper tools. I have used Panzerholz in my plinths, for years. It is more difficult than Baltic Birch ply, yes, but not terribly so.

Another day passes and a few more ideas. I thought about adding discrete vibration control to the 301 but you have to be careful. Too much dampening can cause the music to sound drab and lifeless. So I thought about adding valve damper rings around the 401 bearing spindle housing. I also wondered if pitch stability could be improved on the 301 by adding more magnets on the underside of the platter to update the RoadRunner PSU at a faster rate. Both should be pretty easy to test out and fairly cheap to implement. I'll be adding some thoughts on the new Yannis 420.5 litz tonearm cable.
