Last Gig You Went To...

David Sanborn Trio at Ronnie Scott's last Thursday, featuring David Sanborn on the Alto, Joey Di Francesco on the Hammond, and Bryon Landham on Drums.

Quite a fantastic set - Joey Di Francesco must the be the world's best Hammond B2 player - quite astonishing!. There was a bit where he was playing the bass line on the keyboard at the same time as soloing on the trumpet. The gig took a funny turn when the Hammond took a dive, and David Sanborn and the rest of the band had to improvise a standup routine while it was fixed.

Some amazing playing and music too. Love Ronnie Scotts - always have a great evening there.

Last night was one of the greater nights of my young life. I had the pleasure to see Mastodon and Gojira in concert. Both were such amazing acts and put on an amazing show. Afterwards, I got to meet Gojira's drummer, Mario Duplantier, who was really the nicest and coolest chap I've ever met. I definitely have more respect for this group and my adoration for their music has intensely grown. Definitely would love to see them perform again.

Went to 'Simple Things' festival in Bristol Oct 24th/25th...one of these new fangled multi venue city festivals, a la The Great Escape or Camden Crawl

Friday night was Caribou @ Motion, the boy's gone too dance orientated for me with his latest album, still entertaining but not a patch on Andora/Swim tours...

Saturday was the main event in Colston hall, and various other venues around the city...my first real visit to Bristol, and what a lovely city it is too.

All watched from the front centre balcony, right between the speakers...

Hidden Orchestra - full line up (including the trumpeter, who seems to be a bit unreliable), excellent as always
Nightmares On Wax - absolutely shockingly poor, only one of the original lineup left...and he needs to pack it in too
Liars - Excellent set from their last 2 albums, by this time the room was full, and the sound quality excellent
Mogwai - They never let me down, incredible power, and a wealth of a back catalogue to draw from, 'We're No Here' was epic (see the crappy attached photo for a bit of an idea...unfortunately it won't upload!!!)

That wound up at 1am, then it was off to see the Haxan Cloak at a venue called the lantern, really impressive set, thunderous electronic soundscapes...the girls in our group were fighting to sit on the bass bins...not sure why! ;)

Then things get a little hazy, I'm assured I also caught some of DJ Harvey in a venue called the firestation, but having been at it since lunchtime I frankly can't remember, and going by reports I wouldn't have enjoyed his New York house anyway...

Anyway it looks as if 'Simple Things' are stepping into the void left by the demise of ATP, so keep you eyes open...

P.S. The tickets for the main day were only £34, and the Friday night was £17...now that's value for money :)

My review of the evening

Arrived at 19.30, 19.35 the warm up artists played about 7 tracks, both were local singer songwriter musicians one from Basildon the other from Billericay, Sorry cant remember the names.

Short interlude from 20.15 until 20.30.

Then the one and only Joan Armatrading came on stage to a standing ovation and applause that must have lasted 3 minutes.

Joan has great audience interaction and is also quit funny

Joan must have used at least 7 different guitars including a 12-string model, she also played live keyboard for the first time since 1976

The set list was a good mix of classic and modern tracks

This is Joan’s farewell tour so if you get a chance and like Joan’s music you should go .
