Dave (DSJR) knows about these, apparently all the old grease goes hard & half the battle is chipping this off & replacing it?
Use a hairdryer to soften the grease and wipe it off.
I have a great affection for that deck, but the 100s version which I bought in '71 for about £45, and later changed for the superior SB version. That idler wheel version has a main bearing composed of two washers with a ball race in between, and which IME resulted in grinding of the washers and then rumble. The SB had a more sensible big ball arrangement.
I had years of great musical enjoyment with mine, finally with a Goldring G900SE, and would love to know how it compared with my current system. Lovely looking, and novel.
A wonderful project...that tone arm looks great..I'd wager this deck can be made to sound very nice...good luck with the servicing of this very nice machine....Al..
