Bargains on ebay? (Part 2)

Well, my "Geoff's Special" (Toshiba SR 370) has arrived. Looking at the packaging doubts started to form. And they were realized when it was opened. All the feet smashed, one side of the cover cracked (platter taped in place and came adrift. Not sure why it has to be such a problem to put a platter under a deck when posting it.) and two of the four front edges chipped. Luckily it was the bottom set so less obvious. Went over it with Duraglit which took the newness off the chipped areas and cleaned it up. It was listed as having a speed stability problem and when I looked inside found a pretty basic single transistor regulator, which I'll rebuild.

Nice platter. Thought it might have weighed a bit more.

Shame about the damage Stephen. It's worth getting it running though.

I nearly bid on it myself. I even messaged the guy to ask him if he could pack it safely and pointed out that I'd want the lid and turntable spindle protected. His reply was not encouraging. Suggesting it would be "at the mercy of the carriers".

I was going to do the same Geoff, but I thought he might have used a bit of common sense. I can replace the feet and could have a go at the corners but the damaged lid is nothing I can do about. I suppose it could have been worse.

I like the simplicity of styling it has. And as you have one, thought it must be pretty reasonable. Looking on the 'net I found it said to compare to an SP10 MK I. Don't remember what Haden B. had to say about it in Hi Fi World.

I have a missing foot on my spare one. I may resurrect/refurb it sometime, the feet should be easy to replace with something else and the hefty plinth will spray up nicely. Hope you get yours sorted.

Name and shame, I say, so in future we can all avoid him (or her) like the plague… If you’re going to sell kit and receive payment for it, then bloody well do your ABSOLUTE BEST to ensure that it gets to the person you’ve sold it to in one piece!!

Yep - too many people blame it on the carriers when the real cause of the damage is they were too idle to pack the bloody thing properly in the first place.
'The couriers have played football with it' - no they haven't but neither have they treated it like it was a Faberge egg due to be presented to the Queen - because they are sorting thousands of parcels and yours is no more important than anyone else's. So get the effing bubble wrap out and do a proper job.

Indeed… I think Stephen’s taking it all rather well. I’d be losing the plot!

If Stephen is hanging onto the TT, I'd suggest he asks for a part refund at least. Say 40% or 50%. The damage warrants it. He can send the guy photos of the damage via the eBay messaging facility.
