That 'pop' is simply short for 'popular' is a common misconception - I'm inclined to go with how someone on the radio (I can't remember who) that said "You take a song and produce it to make it 'pop'".

As far as I'm concerned "Pop Music" is anything that was aimed at the charts or entered the charts or was played to death by radio or DJs. No musical skill necessarily required.
