Again, I have to be honest here, I never saw Patti Smith as a rock singer; she was associated with the american punk scene but I saw her more as a poetic folk type singer. If I were to try and give a good example of a female rock singer it'd be Suzi Quatro in her younger days.

Patti Smith is as much a rock singer as she is a punk poet.
Just listen to the LP 'Easter' to hear both abilities.

'Horses' is the only one of hers worth having IMO but that is very good. Yes she's a rock singer, I mean punk was just simple three chord blues rock played faster anyway.

To be fair, I've got all of Hearts albums but, the ones that stand out for me are Heart 1985 and Bad Animals 1987. I still don't think many women can do rock vocals though !!!

Depends how you define 'rock', Maggie Bell, Janis Joplin, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry spring to mind...

I have the first three of her LPs. Love both 'Horses' and 'Easter', but don't think 'Radio Ethiopia' is as good.
