I think it will always be important, but there are just so many other ways to be entertained these days.
At no point in the last 50 years did I ever think "This sounds crap, I wish I had a better stereo". I either connected with the music or didn't, regardless of what it was played on. Nice to have a system that can resolve more detail and greater scale, but the 'essence' will always be there if it's a good song. that way I can still enjoy classic rock songs on my jobsite radio.
Which brings me to an unrelated gripe: Planet Rock has vanished from my radio :( Apparently it's no longer going out on DAB, just DAB+, or tinternet. So looks like I need a DAB+ radio, which will be 130 quid. I sense a con here.
