Another worth considering is the Volvo V60. Whether buying new or used, they all look to be pretty good. Super safe, well equipped, good size boot, and a decent range of engines and trim levels. Diesel D4 probably the one to go for, with 180 odd bhp and decent fuel economy. Their top spec plug-in hybrid will do 0-60 in 4 and a bit seconds, which is nice, but probably not practical for you.
Although not many do this too often, and perhaps it is frowned upon these days, I think it used to be in the police handbook and the Advanced Motorists test. As I recall it is (or was) legal to use the whole width of the road, so going to the "wrong" side to get a view round the bend and then cutting across the corner is legal. I'm not sure what the police think of this these days - have there been changes to the rules? One over riding consideration which might be a gotcha is "consideration for other road users", so if the police saw someone doing a manoeuvre like that they might decide to prosecute or give a warning. I tend to play ultra cautious these days, though on bendy roads the lines I prefer to take are actually safer - as long as I can see the road's clear.Quote:

While staying at a motorcycle rally (MAG's "Farmyard Party") a few years ago, we went out for a run from Helmsley to York, and at some point a police car was behind us. We were on a fast-ish A road, and I did the racing line thing on a couple of the bends just for the hell of it (while keeping my speed legal). Just to see how it may be seen by said copper. No reaction, and he went his own way after a mile or so.
Maybe it would be different in a car or van, as they take up more of the road and aren't as agile.
