Another day another upgrade! Taking no prisoners in the upgrading of the 301 I decided to let the fire power of my wallet do the talking and ordered the full setup from Pheonix Egineering in the good'ol USofA. http://www.phoenix-engr.com/#!/page_Eagle I honestly could not be bothered pissing around builiding a speed controller. The Pheonix looks a quality piece of kit and additionally can be used on any decks that I may wish to refurb/experiment with in the future. :D. Not much left now to do on the 301, motor detachment beckons.
Tenuto arrived, will have a play tonight.
omg! The Tenuto is a revelation. Expect a MEGA review of this mat in the next few days.
The Tenuto gun metal platter mat has now surpassed my old Garrard 301 mat which has now been put out to pasture.

The new mat looks a treat. I'm now awaiting the new external PSU from Pheonix Egineering in the USA. The new PSU should lead to some optimising of power cable length and provide me with an oppotunity to improve the current earthing situation. I'll wait to do these tweeks when I get the PSU and tachometer. I'm just gonna sit back now and get used to the new platter mat's sound.
Looking stunning! Such a classic!
What material is the platter mat made from? Brass only?
Congrats on a very drool-worthy spinner :)
Thanks Mike. I'm not sure what the mat is made from. Matt from Audiograil suggested I try one and there is supposed to be a newer 5mm version coming out soon.
The Tenuto, is made from Gun metal a material which Micro Seiki experimented with to great effect in a number of their platters. In addition to the Tenuto's composition the profile of the mat is a major contributing factor to it's 'sound'. The 1mm drop from run in to run out groove enables the record to 'sit' correctly. At first glance the Tenuto is a simple profiled disk however machining the Tenuto is not as straight forward as it might appear.
The new 5mm Tenuto is proving to be very interesting. I believe stock will become available in the not too distant future
Looks like my PSU and Tachometer have arrived from the USA and are now sitting in London :yay:. Probably get them next week some time and then it's platter stability to 1000th of a single percent. I'm nearing then end of my 301 journey. :wah:
