Noël Coward vetoed the casting of James Mason in a key role because of his stance on the war.

Noël Coward was a friend of Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was Captain of the Royal Navy destroyer H.M.S. Kelly from the outbreak of World War II until the Kelly was sunk by enemy action in May 1941. Coward wrote the screenplay for this movie based on Mountbatten's experiences on H.M.S. Kelly. Coward's character in this movie, Captain E.V. Kinross R.N./Captain "D", was also based on Mountbatten's experiences.

When the man running the pub in the village where the film was being shot discovered that he had used up his alcohol ration on the film crew, he was so distraught he committed suicide.

The reason for the crash which was due to Richard Todd pulling the communication cord mirrors an actual crash the previous year near Winsford in Cheshire when a serviceman on his way home did the same thing so he could get home quicker rather than continuing to Crewe and then catching a train back to Winsford.

On 17 April 1948, 24 people died when the 17:40 Glasgow to London Euston train hauled by LMS Princess Royal Class 4-6-2 No 6207 Princess Arthur of Connaught was stopped after the communication cord was pulled by a passenger (a soldier on leave who presumably lived near Winsford and was seen to leave the train after it had stopped). The stopped train was then run into by a following postal express hauled by LMS Coronation Class 4-6-2 No 6251 City of Nottingham.

The collision happened at between 40 and 45 mph (64 and 72 km/h) and was so severe that only five of the ten passenger coaches could be pulled away on their wheels and only the rear eight of the 13 Postal coaches could be pulled back. 24 passengers were killed. The signalman at Winsford had, in error, reported the passenger train clear of the section and accepted the postal train.

The person who pulled the emergency cord was a railway employee who worked as a signalbox lad in Winsford Junction, but was currently serving in the army having been called up. He thought that the train would be perfectly safe because he knew how the signalling equipment of the time in that area worked; but he did not know that the train had stopped short of the track circuit, which would have reminded the signalman of its presence. He attended the enquiry to confess, and was still a signalman in Winsford Junction until he retired in the 1990s.

'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' (2017)

Let's be honest here there are only two really good Star Wars films - the original (now Episode IV) and 'The Empire Strikes Back (ep. V). So no point in expecting too much almost 40 years on especially as it's now a Disney franchise.

It's watchable, though, with only a few really lame bits and nothing like as bad as Episode I, so that's something at least.

As with most things that get flogged to death they lose sight of what made the early ones so successful. Here they have opted for a succession of set-pieces that are only just barely linked together by the plot (a bit like that 'Harry Potter' film I saw once).

It does seem to me that they have the inevitable video game tie-in in mind when they write these things. There's no structure or tightness to it, and the tone is uneven. Did people who lived a long time ago in a galaxy far away really use transiently fashionable 21st century expressions? Well, who knows? - but it certainly jars you out of the moment (see also: the 'Lord Of The Rings films) - and that's never a good thing.



Also watched episode IX - 'The Rise Of Skywalker' - not doing a separate review as it's just more of the same except they have Richard E Grant in it as a baddie but don't do anything with him. What a waste of probably the best actor they've had in the series since Alec Guinness.

Will there be more? - well it grossed over a billion dollars world wide from a budget of $275 million so I think we can expect episode X at some point not too far distant, and there doesn't seem to be any incentive for them to try harder next time. Oh well.

The original was genius really, a fabulous combination of archetypes that everyone of any age could relate to, but it was never trite or child-like.

I bought a copy of the original theatrical release of it earlier this year - it does not have all the crappy additions and edits of the 'Special Edition' re-release. Han kills Greedo in cold blood and there's no Jawas doing a comedy act in the background.

Okay it's in letterbox format and the print is a bit muddy but it's still a much better watch.

I've seen the first one of those, have to say first time I watched it didn't get past 15 minutes but tried again once I sort of understood where they were going with the tone of it and I quite enjoyed it.

Depp is really good in it, carries it really.

Not seen any of the others as they don't seem to come on the telly very often, but I'll look out for them.

Clint Eastwood was asked for permission about his name being used for Marty in the film. He consented and was said to be tickled by the homage.

According to the book "Billy Gibbons: Rock & Roll Gearhead", ZZ Top was hanging around the set, and was asked to be the town band. During one take, the camera broke. While waiting for the camera to be repaired, Michael J. Fox asked if they would play "Hey Good Lookin'" which they did. Afterwards, more requests were played. Two hours later, someone inquired if the camera had been repaired. Robert Zemeckis replied that it had been fixed for quite a while, he just didn't want to stop the party that had evolved.

How the West Was Won, 1962... all star cast for this epic western.

Henry Hathaway (who directs three out of the five chapters involving the same family), John Ford and George Marshall, produced by Bernard Smith, written by James R. Webb, and narrated by Spencer Tracy.

Stuntman Bob Morgan was seriously injured, and almost died, while performing a stunt in this picture. Toward the end of the film, there is a gunfight on a moving train between the sheriff and a gang of train robbers. Morgan was one of the stuntmen playing a robber and was crouched next to a pile of logs on a flatcar. The chains holding the logs together snapped, and Morgan was crushed by the falling logs. He was so badly hurt it took him five years to recover to the point where he was able to move by himself and walk unaided.

John Ford's habit was to always sit beside the camera while it was filming, so he could watch the action intently. Unfortunately, because of the triple lens on the Cinerama camera, he kept appearing in shots until director of photography Joseph LaShelle hit on the idea of building a rig that allowed Ford to sit above the camera.

Cinerama was so expansive that it couldn't really be configured for close-ups. The nearest it could manage was to place a key actor in the central frame and try to get in as close as possible. This proved to be very intimidating for a lot of actors as the camera (an enormous piece of apparatus under a black hood with three lenses) would be literally in their face--18 inches away, to be precise.

Sir John Boorman was called in for a meeting with MGM President Robert O'Brien in which the executive immediately began expressing concern, but partway into the meeting the phone rang. It was David Lean making requests in advance of his next film, Ryan's Daughter (1970), and O'Brien was so excited to speak with him that when the call ended, he simply ushered Boorman out, saying only "make a good one". Boorman told Lean years later how he had saved him.

Lee Marvin didn't think John Vernon was good for the role, as the actor "wasn't strong enough to contend with him"; and during filming, Marvin punched Vernon in the stomach during a fight scene, causing Vernon to cry out and protest that he was an actor, not a fighter. But Vernon followed it with a visibly-increased energy and anger.

On the film's commentary, Steven Soderbergh talks about the sound of Walker's footsteps as he walks quickly through the airport, and Sir John Boorman adds that when Lee Marvin died, his widow asked the filmmaker if he wanted anything to remember him by, "and I took the shoes from that scene".

An article dated 12/2/65 and circulated by "The Washington Post" said that Dwight D. Eisenhower was "outraged" by this Warner Brothers movie. It said that Columbia Pictures had long had an epic movie in the works about the battle that had the cooperation of the Defense Department, as well as many of the generals who had been involved, including Eisenhower and Bernard L. Montgomery. The working title of Columbia's movie was "16th of December:The Battle of the Bulge." Michael Anderson was slated to direct from a screenplay by Byron Morgan and Tony Lazzarino, and the project was to be co-produced by Lazzorino and Kenneth T. Hoeck. The former president's son John S.D. Eisenhower was writing a companion history of the battle and serving as technical advisor. Anderson was quoted as hoping to have Van Heflin as Eisenhower, David Niven as Montgomery, John Wayne as Gen. George S. Patton and Laurence Olivier as Adolf Hitler. Shortly after Columbia announced that filming would begin during the winter of 1964, Warner Brothers registered the title "The Battle of the Bulge" and announced that it was going to make its own fictional movie, upsetting the plans for Columbia's epic. Columbia obtained an injunction against Warners, dropping it after Warners agreed that its picture would not use the names of any of the real-life figures that had contributed to Columbia's project, such as Eisenhower, Montgomery, Omar Bradley, Anthony McAuliffe, Patton and 10 other figures. The Defense Department had also urged a Federal Trade Commission action against the movie on the grounds that its title was misleading the public. When the article appeared it stated that Columbia's project would go forward, with filming to begin at Camp Drum near Watertown, NY, in the fall of 1966, but the project fell through and the film was never made.
Robert Shaw earned $350,000 for his role as the German Panzer commander, more than he had earned in his entire career up to that point. That amount, after adjusting for inflation, would be equivalent to $3 million in 2022.

German King Tiger tanks in this movie are actually American M47 Patton tanks, and the M4 Sherman tanks are actually M24 Chaffee tanks.

Despite being portrayed as a villain, NASA provided technical assistance, including mock-up spacecraft, sets, vehicles, front screen projection expertise.

One of the stunt pilots, Frank Tallman, who flew the red stearman plane, claimed this film was the most dangerous film he'd ever flown for. He was killed in a crash soon after filming finished. I thought [Simpson's acting ability] was not going to frighten Daniel Day-Lewis. O. J. was a celebrity of enormous stature, and somebody who had not shown the chops to play the part. My goal was to see if I could make this guy work for what I wanted. It came time to do his last scene. He's a guy who's parched and delusional. So rather than him acting somebody who was desperately thirsty, I put appliances on his face that made it difficult for him to move and difficult to talk, and it just made him sound like he was in desperate trouble. And he was pretty good. You know, what can I say? He was a charming, terrific guy, he was a positive guy, he tried very hard, and it was clear that he saw a future for himself in film."

Inclined to agree - I saw the first and then the second, which did not add much. It's now a franchise, and despite the inclusion of the inestimable Geoffrey Rush they all seem to be much of a muchness.

When Andrew regales the family with jokes, the jokes themselves were unscripted. Robin Williams ad-libbed all of the jokes. The other actors' reactions to the jokes and their laughter are real.

The aria that Andrew is listening to when he first uses the record player is from Dvorak's opera "Rusalka." The opera is concerned with the fairy-tale story of a water nymph who wants to become mortal for love.

The female robot, Galatea, is named after the statue brought to life by the gods in the Pygmalion myth.

Harry Palmer is depicted as an accomplished cook, but when you see Palmer skillfully break a couple of eggs, the hands in the close-up belong to Len Deighton, author of the book on which this movie was based. Deighton was an accomplished cook and also wrote a comic strip about cooking for The Observer. The walls of Palmer's kitchen are full of these strips.


Palmer is the first action hero to wear glasses. (Sir Michael Caine is near-sighted in real life.) Caine chose to wear glasses because he expected this movie to be the first of a franchise, similar to the Bond movies. He feared being over-identified with the character of Harry Palmer, and so he wore the glasses so that he could remove them for other roles.
Harry's glasses frames were dark brown, contrary to the widely held view that they were black. They were a style called "Teviot 74" manufactured by a company called "U.K. Optical". They were already popular at the time for being a stylish and inexpensive alternative to the standard models that were issued for "free" by the National Health Service in Britain. They became even more popular after the success of this movie. Len Deighton wore the same frames at this time. Those frames have been described by some as the first affordable "designer" frames available in the U.K.

The large caliber rifle that Swagger owns, with which he is framed, is a Cheyenne Tactical M200 Intervention. It fires a .408 caliber projectile accurately out to and beyond two thousand meters. The CheyTac M200 is also available with a Long Range Rifle System, which consists of a laser range finder, magnifying scope with night vision capability, and a weather-sensing module, all of which interface with a PDA running ballistics calculation software.

When Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) directs his M200 at a can of beef stew he set up for target practice. He locks his scope dead center on it and looks over at his dog and says "1760 (meters), that's about a mile". At that distance, a shooter has to take into account wind, bullet spin drift, the Coriolis Effect, etc. which means Swagger would have needed to apply "Kentucky Windage" to compensate for these variables. In other words, the scope would have been off center as snipers use the scope cross hair mil dots to compensate. In addition, the Cheytac M200 Intervention sniper rifle includes a ballistic computer PDA as well as mathematical documentation to aide in precise aiming, which means the scope would be anything but dead center on the beef stew can.

Good film - the first and the best of the Harry Palmer trilogy.

This is or was available on Netflix, outstanding and thoroughly recommended. I can't see anybody, young or old not enjoying this brilliant doccy.

John Huston and company tickled themselves with a number of other on-set jokes. As Mary Astor recounted in her autobiography, the cast and crew had a system, whereby Huston would signal for a certain practical joke to be played for visitors to the set. For the benefit of visiting star-struck social club women, the "No. 5" had Humphrey Bogart going into a prepared act with Sydney Greenstreet. He'd start yelling and cursing at him, calling him a fat old fool. "Who the hell do you think you are? You upstaged me, and I'm telling you I'm not having any--," at which point Huston would jump into the act, holding back Bogart's mock rage. Very quickly, the embarrassed and disillusioned ladies would shuffle towards the nearest exit. Meanwhile, the "No. 10" had Peter Lorre coming out of Astor's dressing room at the appropriate moment, adjusting his fly and saying, "See you later, Mary."

In the outdoor elevator action sequence, Patricia Clarkson stated how she was petrified when the elevator was shot at by a blaze of deafening and frightening firepower, but was comforted greatly by Clint Eastwood, who, as Dirty Harry, covered and protected her. Clarkson has revealed that the bullets from the battery of Uzis were in fact marbles.

This movie came about when Warner Brothers greenlit and financed Clint Eastwood's pet project, the biopic of musician Charles "Yardbird" Parker, Jr. called Bird (1988). Eastwood, returning the favor to the studio, agreed to make a movie for them that would be commercial and carry box-office weight. Warner Brothers suggested another Dirty Harry movie.

David Soul's performance as Officer John Davis, one of the vigilante cops, led to his being cast as Detective Ken Hutchinson in the classic cop series Starsky and Hutch (1975).

Albert Popwell, who played the pimp, appeared in the first four "Dirty Harry" movies with Clint Eastwood. He portrayed a different character in each movie. He was the bank robber in Dirty Harry (1971), the pimp in this movie, a black militant leader in The Enforcer (1976), and as Harry's partner Horace in Sudden Impact (1983).

The motorcycles used by the "death squad" cops through most of the movie are Moto Guzzi Eldorado Police bikes. However, Triumph 500cc T100 Tiger motorcycles were used during the scenes on the aircraft carrier at the end. These were favored by the stunt riders, as they were lighter and easier to handle than the Moto Guzzis.

Cinematographer John Seitz admired Preston Sturges' unconventional approach to his work. The opening scene comprised ten pages of dialogue to cover about four and a half minutes of screen time. It was scheduled for two complete days of shooting. On the morning of the first day, Seitz found Sturges inspecting the set with a viewfinder, looking for where he could cut the scene and change camera set-ups. Seitz dared him to do it all in one take. Never one to refuse a dare, Sturges took him up on it, although the nervous Seitz had never attempted to complete a two-day work schedule in one day. With the endorsement of McCrea and the rest of the actors, Sturges pressed on, determined to set a record. The first take was fine, but the camera wobbled a little in the tracking shot following the men from screening room to office, so they tried again. They did two or three takes at the most and that was it - two full days work by 11 a.m. on the first day, a feat that had the entire studio buzzing.

Preston Sturges had originally intended to use a clip from a Charles Chaplin film for the church sequence, but Chaplin wouldn't give permission. In an earlier scene, Joel McCrea does parody the Little Tramp character. The cartoon eventually used was Walt Disney's Playful Pluto (1934).

It's hinted that Mic Fleetwood plays himself in the movie. In the film, the resistance leader's name is Mick and he is British and when Mick meets Richards to remove his explosive collar from around his neck he says to him "You're one of the cops who locked up all my friends, burned my songs."

When Rob Cohen purchased the rights to the Richard Bachman novel "The Running Man", he had no idea that Bachman was actually a pseudonym for Stephen King.

Many people who worked with Richard Dawson on the game show Family Feud (1976) say that in real life Dawson was more like his character Damon Killian in his handling of underlings. Although Arnold Schwarzenegger hates Richard Dawson onscreen, in real life they were lifelong friends.

Erland van Lidth ("Dynamo") was a classically trained Helden baritone opera singer, so in his introduction when Dynamo is singing an aria from "The Marriage of Figaro", it actually is van Lidth singing. This was also his final movie( he died of a heart attack at 34 i seem to remember. he was 6'6" and 350lbs), as well as that of Richard Dawson (Damon Killian).

The "dead" Indian under the rock, when the rock is removed, is clearly breathing. lol..

Beulah Archuletta (who played the indian woman 'Look') was found crying in one of the tipis by John Wayne in between shooting scenes. When Wayne asked her why she was crying, she responded that she was going to miss her son's wedding because she was filming her scenes at the time. Wayne stopped production of the film for a few days and flew her to California so that she could attend the wedding.

The eccentric character of Mose Harper, played by Hank Worden, is loosely based on an actual historical personage called Mad Mose, a legendary half-crazy Indian fighter of the American southwest with a fondness for rocking chairs.

a grim film at times with wayne's characters' massive racial hatred eventually finding some redemption. maybe a film that wouldn't get made like it is today(which is sad).
