The film was shot in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada on a $15 million budget beginning on November 15, 1981, and continuing until April 1982. The town scenes in the movie were shot in Hope and the nearby Othello Tunnels, called Chapman Gorge in the film,[12] while the rest of the movie was shot in Capilano Canyon, Golden Ears Provincial Park and Pitt Lake in Pitt Meadows. During the production Buzz Feitshans replaced producer Ed Carlin, who suffered a heart attack.

An over-sized version of Dr. Schreber's syringe (roughly a yard long) was built for the close up shots of the needle being extended so that its surface details would be visible in the focal plane of the camera lens.

The cricket-obsessed characters Charters and Caldicott were created especially for this movie and do not appear in the novel written by Ethel Lina White.

Leslie Gilliat shot screen tests, including that of Michael Redgrave (with and without mustache), and later remembered that when testing one actress for the role of Miss Froy, Alfred Hitchcock instructed him not to put any film in the camera, since he had already secretly and successfully negotiated for May Whitty to play the part.

Phil at the piano teacher's house, when he is fumblingly playing Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paginini," is actually Bill Murray playing. He does not read music, but he learned that much of the song by ear. The same rhapsody, specifically its 18th Variation, was also used in another time fantasy movie, Somewhere in Time (1980).

Although Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the stars of the film, 20th Century Fox was unsure whether the film would be a hit or not, therefore Richard Greene, already a well-established star, was given top billing, while Rathbone and Bruce were billed second and fourth respectively. The dice game that Will Turner plays with Davy Jones is called Liar's Dice, a gambling game where each player has to make consecutively higher bids based upon how many of each die they claim are on the table (two threes, four fives, etc.), until a player is called a liar, in which case, all the dice are shown, and it's seen if the bid is correct. Normally, a player only loses a die when caught in a lie, and is not out of the game until he has lost all of his dice.

During filming in Yugoslavia in 1969, Donald Sutherland (Oddball) received word, via co-star Clint Eastwood (Lieutenant Kelly), that his then-wife Shirley Douglas was arrested: she had tried to buy--using a personal check--hand grenades from an undercover FBI agent for the Black Panthers. Sutherland recounts this story often, mentioning that when Eastwood got to the part about the personal check, he laughed so hard that he fell to his knees and Sutherland had to help him up. Eastwood then put his arm around Sutherland, walked him down the hill that overlooked the Yugoslavian countryside, and assured his friend of his complete support with his predicament. Sutherland and Douglas, who are the parents of Kiefer Sutherland and twin sister Rachel Sutherland, divorced in 1970.

The three Tiger I tanks used were actually ex-Soviet Army T-34 tanks, converted in great detail by specialists of the Yugoslavian Army. They are not the same ones used in a previous movie, The Battle of Neretva (1969), which were much less well done. The care taken to make the T-34s look like Tiger tanks was notable, most period World War II movies used unmodified modern tanks as their vehicles, with minimal effort to change their appearances, often no more than painting the tanks with gray or yellow with distinctive German crosses. Oddball's (Donald Sutherland's) Shermans are Yugoslavian Army M4A3E4 Shermans (post-war U.S. upgraded to 76mm in original 75mm turret).

The film uses vehicles as plot devices. Palfrey foolishly buys a "1924 4-litre Swiftmobile" from the crooked "Winsome Welshmen". Later in the film he succeeds in trading the car back to them for an ex-works Austin-Healey 100-six and 100 guineas (£105). The "Swiftmobile" was in fact based upon a 1928 4½ litre Open four-seater Bentley, with a custom two-seat open body. The car, minus the body, was sold by the studio in 1961 for £50, and re-sold (with new body) at an auction in 2003 for £110,000. The Austin-Healey 100-six used in the film was passed in at auction in the 1970s at around £30,000. The "Bellini 3.6" driven by Terry-Thomas is in fact a disguised Aston Martin DB3S.

The original camera negative was saved from the Henderson's Film Laboratories fire of 1993, just before a massive nitrate explosion destroyed the negatives of many other movies, including several other Ealing comedies.

In the trial at the end of the film, as the camera pans round, you can clearly see a very young Sean Connery sitting on the back row. He is in quite a few sustained shots too. This has never been confirmed but it's definitely him and the timing is right for the start of his film career.

its a nice story, but ive no idea if its true. personally i'd say it wasn't. Connery tho was at one time thought to have been the cause of gangster Johnny Stompanato's death, and gangsters were thought to be after him. he went into hiding until it was cleared up.... it was of course lana turners daughter who killed him. Stompanato had flown to england at one time and pointed a gun a sean, who promptly disarmed him etc.. Stompanato was annoyed at a possible affair between sean and lana while they were making a film.

great cast and film this...

David Warner suffered from vertigo and had a panic attack before he was due to fly out to the set. Although they had never met and the Englishman wasn't a name to conjure with in Hollywood, Sam Peckinpah was so determined to cast Warner that it was arranged he should sail over to America, even though this meant holding up his scenes three weeks. Warner deeply appreciated this and they made two more films together: Straw Dogs (1971) and Cross of Iron (1977).

Good film.

Sad news about David Warner. I remember being impressed by his (debut?) performance in "Morgan - a Suitable Case for Treatment" (1966). And I liked his performance as 'Dr Necessiter' in "The Man With Two Brains". He was also good in the two films you mention.

According to Eli Wallach, when it came time to blow up the bridge, Sergio Leone asked the Spanish Army Captain in charge to trigger the fuse, as a sign of gratitude for the Army's collaboration. They agreed to blow up the bridge when Leone gave the signal "Vai!" (Go!) over the walkie-talkie. Unfortunately, another crew member spoke on the same channel, saying the words "vai, vai!", meaning "it's okay, proceed" to a second crew member. The Captain heard this signal, thought it was for him, and blew up the bridge. Unfortunately, no cameras were running at the time. Leone was so upset that he fired the crewman, who promptly fled from the set in his car. The Captain was so sorry for what happened that he proposed to Leone that the Army would rebuild the bridge to blow it up again, with one condition: that the fired crewman be re-hired. Leone agreed, the crewman was forgiven, the bridge was rebuilt, and the scene was successfully shot.

There are lots of goofs in this film, not that they spoil the fun too much... When Angel Eyes enters the house at the beginning you can see a radiant station antenna in the background.
Blondie is seen shooting Tuco's rope with a Sharps 1874, 12 years too late for the film's setting.
The American flags flown by the Union army have 50 stars, 97 years too late for the film's setting.

The German general demands that scopolamine be used to interrogate the prisoner left behind by the group. However, while scopolamine was documented in 1881 it did not come into commercial or widespread use until 1947, two years after WWII ended. Additionally, it was not known to be a truth serum drug until the early 1950s.

The map featured near beginning of the film is a map showing the post war position with territorial boundaries of Germany and Poland that were not made and recognized until well after 1945.

When filming began, Robert Mitchum worried that Deborah Kerr would be like the prim characters she frequently played. However, after she swore at director John Huston during one take, Mitchum, who was in the water, almost drowned laughing. The two stars went on to have an enduring friendship which lasted until Mitchum's death in 1997.

Robert Mitchum is shown throughout the movie wearing a metal expansion bracelet for his wristwatch. Such bracelets were introduced by Speidel in the 1950s afaik. lol
