Alternative platters ?

Indeed, Richard. However, that's not the point. The service I'm referring to is (more often than not on AoS) available to any member who can convince the manufacturer and/or dealer concerned that he or she is a serious buyer for their product(s), or perhaps influentical in some way, and therefore 'worth the effort', as it were! :)

The fact is, Martin doesn't have his own forum, yet he has no problem getting stuff sent to him for audition, nor do others of his ilk... Ask yourself why that is? ;)

I think this is the last I will contribute to this matter as there is little progress apparent.

But Arthur, you do seem to want things both ways. When I write that I mean that you cite Martin Colloms measurements as proof that there is a problem with platter damping but, at the same time, you promote the idea that measurements are of little value. I'm afraid that stance seems rather simplistic and not a little convenient.

I wouldn't expect a customer to choose on the basis of measurement but I would expect a designer to use measurement, together with subjective evaluation.

I'm certain that's exactly what Arthur does, Mark. What he's saying, however, is that (like me), measurement is never the final arbiter: his ears and 30-years experience as an audio equipment designer are (although in my case, said experience refers merely to my humble status as an audio enthusiast)...

I agree Mark. Although I think Arthurs post was perhaps more muddled than rejecting of measurement. He pointed out that the right measurement CAN not only be helpful, but pretty much predict what the ears will tell (FXR)
The wrong measurement is useless and misleading (slowing under load)
Missing a measurement that is relevant can lead to an unfortunate partial insight (servo load effect won't be measured by the platter ringing measurements proposed)

And in the final analysis we listen to the damn stuff not measure it and need to use that tool too. Maybe he was trying to avoid my penchant for controversy and tread a diplomatic line. He has product to sell! (I don't!) :eyebrows:

But he has made his fair share of use of measurements in his time - it happens the new platter idea arose out of auditioning not measuring this time. And it is probably more appropriate for someone like Paul to measure independantly than for a manufacturer who has already developed a product based on ideas about physics, awareness of materials and construction techniques, and auditioning confirmation to do so.

Measurements would be interesting. But no substitute for audition. For those lucky enough to be able to audition. :cool:
