After an enjoyable listen to Abbado a few weeks ago, I fancied another listen to Beethoven's 9th.
Had a brief go with Menuhin, then Jochum ... :nono: didn't fit the bill.

Yes! The 1st mvt is hewn from granite - magnificent.
The adagio seems like a transcription from a slow mvt of a late string quartet. Awesome.
I have to confess I didn't bother with the finale - that just seems trite to me these days. :o

Found a brand new copy of this (long deleted) recording in London, and I do love me some Jessye Norman. So, that'll be my fourth Salome in the collection.
Love this one. I have to say I enjoy the finale, and a persuasive quartet like this one helps. I like the Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt from the 60s as well with the famous Sutherland-Horne-King-Talvela lineup.Quote:
