Not read any Tom Sharpe for years. Marvellous stuff!

Sure was Geoff. his books along with G M Fraser have helped me laugh my way out of despair many a time. The title song, Dives in Omnia" ("There's Money in Everything") was sung by The Flying Pickets.

The film's beach sequences were shot at Camber Sands in south east England. The scene where the bridge was blown during the early part of the film was on the River Medway at Teston Bridge, Teston in Kent.

The wartime Dunkirk town centre was recreated using part of Rye Harbour in Sussex, England. A canal-type bridge was temporarily constructed over the upper harbour, leading on to the quayside. It was over this bridge that the refugees and troops poured into the 'town centre'. Several scenes take place at this location, particularly a tracking shot following two British Army officers as they discuss the situation. In the background, the viewer can make out Rye Church, and also some old warehouses which still exist, albeit in much restored condition. One of the warehouses was used as the interior for the 'Barn Scene'.

The film was the second most popular production at the British box office in 1958. According to MGM records it earned only $310,000 in the US and Canada but $1,750,000 elsewhere, resulting in a profit of $371,000.

An image of Sean Barrett as Frankie was used on the cover of The Smiths' 1985 single "How Soon Is Now?"

Very moving film. I have a customer who was there and among the last men to get off the beaches. Amazingly humble man, a real pleasure to talk with.

Sold a copy of that earlier today (I work in a bookshop) and the customer and I were discussing the TV series, very funny, though I thought Blot on The Landscape better.

I have ti say book wise it is one of the weaker but most are not really tv material. The throwback was my favourite but it couldnt really be done. Blott was great too as was ancestoral vices. Think i remember Wilt being made into a film but was not so great.

Dont think tv could do the flashy novels justice either

I'd love to see Flashman on TV or maybe a film franchise. Apparantly after the film of 'Royal Flash' GMF wouldn't entertain the idea unless he could have complete creative control, which understandably no-one would give him.

I have all the novels on my ebook and most on cd read by differing guys. All superb readers. I listen to them when i am in the car on an endless loop...i love harry...lol

currently got Ice Age 3 on. I know, I know, but it is good.:)
