Tell Me Something............Anything!

Starbucks is hideous, Costa is slightly better, but the food is shite. For good cofffee you need the independents, and some of those get it wrong. Thing I hate about coffee shops these days - in Brighton anyway, is there'a always some tosser with a laptop sat next to you tapping away. In fact many of Brighton's coffee shops are just rows of single tables with beanie hatted middle class clones sat at each table with screens in front of them, more like a work place than somewhere to wind down. I was thinking of opening a cafe called 'No Wifi'! Personally I prefer the atmosphere of the traditional British tearoom, and frequent Sussex's finest, and avoid the bogus ones. Nothing gets me more riled than a chocolate brownie, I'm a hardore victoria sandwich aficionado.

Me and Mrs. P were in a traditional British tearoom in Hawkshead earlier this week, where there were 3 other couples seated. That was 6 smartphones on the go, with no one speaking to each other. Apart from us, we were commenting loudly enough on the demise of proper conversation, but nobody listened nor cared.

And they were all sixty-somethings, not kids.

I don't carry one and I still don't speak to anybody (unless I have to :)).

everyone I pass on the way to work and on the way home is either talking on their phone or looking at it.

Who wants to have a chat on the phone at 0730 in the morning? And what do they talk about? Do they ever run out of things to talk about?

It looks like a living hell to me.

My father always used to say 'The telephone is only to be used for emergencies and important messages.' Of course in those days it was the rip-off GPO/BT monopoly, none of this unlimited call time you can buy now.

We were always fascinated by American teen movies where they would have their own phone in their bedroom and spend hours on it. That was inconceivable to us.

Not a fan of talking on my mobile, but better that than texting. What winds me up is when someone texts me about something that requires a lengthy reply, so I phone them back, and they don't bloody answer :steam:

It's the numpties who walk down the road, using their phone (either talking, reading texts, or playing games) and not looking where they are going that get me. :doh:

Purely by chance I saw his name in the "Current active users" bit at the bottom of the page. Oh well...

Recently Anita has been having some pain in her back, which is worse as she breathes in. She went to her doctor who sent her for an x ray. This showed something "unusual" in her chest, so she was then sent for a CT scan. Which she went for yesterday. Actually two scans, one was preceded by some intravenous stuff which I assume was for contrast. Then she had to wait to hear back about the results.

Now, 24 hours later she gets a call from her GP, who informs her that she has two broken ribs! Obviously she's relieved, the news could have been so much worse. But she has no idea how this happened. Women are tough.

Tough indeed, give her our love.

PS don't jump so high next time :eek:

glad that's all it is. Amazing she can't recall how she did it, takes some force to break ribs.

Yes -we wish her well for a speedy recovery.

Ha! I think "disappointing" might be a better adjective (or is that an adverb?) These days the little blue pill is only handy for keeping me from rolling out of bed :(

Just some thoughts.

Modern attitudes to older things are strange.

Are what I regard as normal skills so lacking? In this age of 'disposable' items, there are many TV programmes dedicated to renovation/restoration/recycling/repairing/upcycling, etc. and folk seem amazed by the often basic skills displayed. These activities would have been regarded as normal when I was young, people mended things! Repairing and restoring things is something I have always done, as did most of my family.

I don't get the 'shabby chic' idea. In my book if you renovate something, making it look old and worn again is counter-productive and daft! And 'patina' is a modern fad, nobody used to baulk at polishing, repainting or revarnishing items to literally improve them.

Also, elderly cars, trucks and bikes with an intentionally rusty look seem popular now, god knows why (Henry Cole carries some of the blame :)). If an older vehicle is getting scruffy, just tidy it up! Fifty years ago owning and driving a rusty motor would have been regarded as unfortunate and the owner would likely be either broke or lazy. Did you know that you can even get 'rusty car look' vinyl body wrap now? That's just silly.

indeed, society went all 'disposable' and only now are realising there are finite limits to how much raw materials there are and how much rubbish we can bury.
i never had a new bike in my life they were all, can i say... 'recycled' lol in many ways people became wealthier and just wanted new, new, new... now many want old but have lost the skills to recover/repair stuff.

Got this precision driver set.
All metal and loads of tips. Nicely put together. 4sides of ends etc..
Been needing a new set for a while and this should cover most things.

Surprising just how many things require torx bits, including my old CD player as I discovered yesterday. My set looks like this, and it's crap. Lost 2 of them already, fortunately not the two I needed yesterday.

Bloody Kickstarter again. This product was launched in 2017, and the article, dated March 2023, reports that a "significant number of backers are yet to receive theirs". And with only 5 being built each month, I'm guessing they'll be waiting for a while yet.

Linear tracking but it's a belt drive and you can't change the cartridge so you're stuck with an AT95. Think I'd rather have an SL10.

not disagreeing but when all said and done, its a box; and thats what the disc one gets away from. its like a living 3d photo come statue. the young with cash will love it. i'd rather have jo's one personally but i see this one's desire effect

a lot of folk out running this morning... crazy amount tbh.. must be due to first non freezing saturday i guess...:lol:

We went out for a walk yesterday, a whole 2 miles! with a cappucinno in a cafe halfway along. Probably as much calories there as we burned. Largely quite boring, apart from the bit where Anita went on her arse, that was quite funny. Apparently I'm cruel and heartless, though I did help her get back up.

Trail was very busy, had to say hello to a lot of folk :(

Yes she did mention the ribs. And something about regretting my semi retirement. In my defence I did let her drag me round Tesco for an hour on Thursday, and later she'll be dragging me round Chorley town centre. But that's a lot of dragging, which can't be good for her.

I also just did the grocery Tesco run for the week, did mine this morning. Mrs. not quite up to it yet following a new hip six weeks ago, she's doing well though. Wasn't sure I was up to it either, had a nasty feverish bug all week, nearly OK now :).
