-- I do often like Britten's non-vocal music. These quartets are excellent - Shostyesque!

-- I tried this (again) - great until the vocals start - the way Britten gets the soloists to sing in a weird declamatory style is a big turn-off for me - makes my skin crawl.
I gave up after less than 10 minutes - it's now up for sale on eBay! Sometimes you just have to say 'enough' !! :D

.... ahhh, that's more like it. My Britten's Requiem-tortured soul is healed by Beethoven. :)
Nowt wrong with mono… Some of the best ever classical music performances were recorded on that format, on vinyl - and many sound stunning!
Marco.
Much prefer Britten's SQs over Shosty's
Normally I don't like spoken words, eg Beethoven's ninth. Also, if I remember correctly, Stravinsky acknowledged the dialogue in Oedipus was a mistake. In my opinion the music should do the talking. But the War Requiem is a different beast. The poems stand up in their own right and Britten's tones and rhythm enhance the tension. So the way I see it is that it is music, then poetry, then music etc. Still I can see why you needed relief :->
Nowt wrong at all but I thought the gold stereophonic sticker on the cover and stereophonic written in big letters across the label might have been the givaway  unless of course HMV cocked up, put the wrong label on the record and then stuck it into the wrong sleeve
Jerry probably just posted a Google image (in order to identify what he was listening to), which showed a stereo version. If he says his is mono, however, it’ll be mono :)
