I never bothered much with punk records, apart from Stranglers (does that count?) and "Never Mind..." For me that music was a case of You Had To Be There, and certainly not something I could sit and listen to.
I think that you are right in having to be there at the time. I do like the Stranglers and will give their back catalogue a work through at some point; certainly Peaches is a fave for me to stick on the Jukebox at the pubQuote:

If you haven't listened before then I'd say start with this album and think Black Sabbath meets Hawkwind.
Punk as a reset (OK, a timely 'kick up the arse') movement was needed to halt the increasingly self indulgent and excessive offerings from the likes of Rick Wakeman, ELP, Jethro Tull etc.
Ignoring The Police, who started out as a sort of 'punk-light', my favourite punk performers were/are Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Stranglers, The Clash, Dead Kennedys, Talking Heads and John Cooper Clarke.
I bought the original version of this album when it came out in 2013 but didn't discover the 2015 Dub version until a couple of years ago - spinning now on Spotify while I muse adding a Sub to match my Adam T5V Monitors :scratch:
