Still miss my old moggie 'The Boy', it must be getting on for ten years since he died. He was HUGE!! Four feet long stretched out and nearly forty pounds, all muscle and big bones, no fat. Bigger than my Staffie, but the softest nature ever, never growled, hissed or showed any aggression at all. He just purred. :)

18 isn't so old these days for cats, as like human beings, animals are living longer now, due to improved diets/advances in veterinary medicine, so hopefully she's got a few more years left yet! Our (tabby) cats typically live until their early 20s. Our last black and white made her 22nd birthday!
Fate of course will be fate, but one of the most important things to do with cats (or dogs), in terms of prolonging their longevity, is looking after their teeth! That means a healthy, varied diet, and if necessary keeping tartar under control. That last bit is vitally important, because as soon as any animal starts having tooth or gum problems, it affects their appetite/general well-being, and it can be the beginning of a slippery downwards slope...
Also, just as you would with any human member of your family, keep an eye on your cat(s) and watch for any adverse changes in their behaviour, and if you're concerned, take them immediately to the vet. Plus take them there for regular check-ups and have them immunised annually for cat flu.
Quite simply, if you care for them, don't take any chances with their health, and the likelihood is, barring any unforeseen medical issues, you'll be rewarded with the long relationship of a loving companion.

I am taking my two boys (Reeves and Mortimer) to the vets tomorrow to have them neutered ..... poor buggers as they know nothing about it.:stalks:

Shouting is the best method although kittens not so receptive to that.
Once cat is mature it should not be chewing on or damaging anything, if it is then it is because it is not happy.
Exception being if they want feeding and you are paying no attention so they start raking the furniture. Obviously this is deliberate to piss you off so shouting won't help. Solution is to feed the cat.
My speakers are gloss black, so the cat has no interest. Might be different if they looked a bit more 'woody'. Problem here is Mrs. Pony with the hoover, and shouting doesn't seem to work, she just says something about me doing it myself with a few f words chucked in :(

if the cat is trashing stuff it is because he is stressed in some way. Cats are like Dustin Hoffman in 'Rainman', they want routine and predictability in their home. The also want to be able to come and go as they please. if the cat is imprisoned in the house it will stress (although you get the odd one that doesn't like going out at all that is very rare). Likewise if they have to ask to go out, or just get chucked out and have to wait to be let back in. You have to construct your life and home around the cat, not the other way around.
