Have you tried adjusting VTA 'on the fly', whilst a record is playing, and fine-tuning the results by ear? For me, that's the biggest boon with the stock Technics arm, and of course the FX-1200...

How much is a Jelco, with armboard, mounting collar and a decent tonearm cable?
I bet the price difference isn't huge.
From the looks point of view, I can understand why people don't want to spend the cash on it, but from a performance perspective it's great.
I tend to buy with my ears when shopping for Hifi. Sure, I'll read reviews but the final decision comes down to what sounds good (unless the Mrs is with me, then it's what sounds good, looks wife friendly, and what matches the soft furnishings).

It's a shame I don't live closer as I could bring my deck round for one of you to drop your platter on for a listen. It does not have a fancy PSU or the regulator mods, but you would get a flavour for the sound (and I would hear what the platter does).

I'm not advocating the Dynavector for everyone, Kevin! Sure, it's an expensive arm, although beautifully made, and the law of diminishing returns applies. In my case, I had wanted one for the best part of thirty years so it was wonderful to finally take delivery of one direct from Tokyo production. It's a superb sounding arm (to my ears, much better than an SME V, for instance) but isn't for everyone. I still believe I'm the only person in the world to have mounted one on a Technics SL-1210.

I think it looks superb, but can only ponder what it sounds like.
One day, if I am lucky enough I may be in a position to purchase an arm of the same quality.
At the moment, life has other priorities for my hard earned cash.
Some reviews I have read say that the FXR is better than a SME IV or V, but I think reviews are very subjective.
How this translates to the FX-1200 is another question. The main thing is that the FX-1200 has given me an insight into the higher end, and I am happy with my purchase.
The detail extracted from the vinyl is definitely a step up, and with the AT150MLX I get a really natural sound from my system. I am at the point now of wondering if I need to improve my amplification, cables or speakers to get more from it.
I usually listen on headphones late at night, and I am happy with this element.
However, when the wife is out I use my main speakers.
Yes, it also appears on MCRU's pages.
Knowing Arthur's expertise, and although I haven't heard the FXR, I would expect it to perform well as he has a good handle on low resonance designs.

Good effort, Keiron. It's been a while since I ran an SME III - can't say I've ever seen one on a Technics. Looks nice.
Thanks for the kind words. It's a dark walnut (not as dark as I'd hoped) and finished in Danish oil. It's a tad patchy to be honest - I'll give it another 'scrub' at some point to even the finish out.
It actually still incorporates the original plinth. I simply bolted 4 pieces of MDF around the edge and filled the gaps. It still uses the same rubber chassis.
It has a Paul Hynes external PSU (it came like that when I bought it).
The change is purely cosmetic. Sticking these bits on has made absolutely no difference to the sound. But admittedly you could probably take it away and replace it with a Steepletone and I wouldn't hear the difference, so cloth-like are my ears :)

And finally I got my hands on a 1210mk5G :) My good friend had this, and has excactly the same upgrades as my 1210mk2. Mike New Bearing was the last upgrade that we did last week. He wanted a Rega P9. Can you belive that:ner:
The mk5G looks so much better than the mk2, too. The future upgrades would be Mike New ETP Platter and maybe change the arm. But I will keep it as it is for some time now. It's been upgraded from scratch the last 6 months:
