Any Linn LP12 users still on the forum?

The plinth would be far and away the most expensive part. But for an LP12 to look mint, that and the lid would be the most important parts. Fluted Afromosia for me, the original and best! :)

So you'd have to be either spending big, or be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get the sandpaper out ;)

To be honest, as far as aesthetics is concerned, IMO the fluted Afromosia plinth is the only attractive feature of the Linn LP12. Regarding the rest, the Linn is no better looking than either the original AR XB1, or the Thorens TD150/II turntables.

Yup, as Barry says a logical start point would be the plinth and I would want that to be in very good shape - I have found ones that meet this for between £300 to £400. A new Linn plinth starts at £795, more than a Rega Planer 3!

Original fluted is the way for me too Steve and yup, all those upgrades means a good choice of older parts are available. Linn parts aren’t cheap but the upside to that is they do seem to hold their value if I decide it’s not for me. I’m still mulling it over at the moment and whilst I decide I’m going to get my 1210 tidied up and running again, it’s stripped down at the moment. If I do a good job on that I might decide it’s enough, but I’ll still have that itch!

I had a LP12 for a couple years in the early 80’s but was sold as I was moving overseas, I did think about buying another when I returned to Scotland a few years later but decided against it.

I had two LP12s once, one with a fluted afro plinth and the other with a fluted walnut plinth. They were quite difficult to tell apart but I slightly preferred the walnut one. I kept the afro one though, because that was the one I bought new (the other came with an Ekos 2 that I wanted). I got as far as LP12/Ekos2/Lingo2/Prefix2/Troika (which I enjoyed) before selling the lot. Currently have Thorens TD124II, a Sony TTS9000, a grease bearing Garrard 301 and an EMT 927, so plenty to choose from and no regrets.

I wouldn't dissuade anyone from owning an LP12 but I'm not sure they are great value for money.

Yup, I can't disagree with that one bit, they are terrible value for money, especially new one's IMO. Secondhand they do seem to hold their value though, so if you found a good one and decided not to keep it, seems you might not lose much.

But that's just an observation from what I've learned - I guess if the bottom fell out of the turntable market again, you could get stung.

Agree completely, though being honest I have never ever bought anything with an eye on future values. It's always been for me in the here and now. Probably why I'm so poor in my dotage :doh:
