Beethoven – ‘Symphonies No. 1 Op.21 and No.6, Op.68’

The London Classical Players, cond. Roger Norrington.
EMI CDC 7 49746 2 (1988)
Yet another couple of Beethoven symphonies to add to my collection, and to my collection of his work performed on period instruments.
I found my attention wandering during the first two movements, but things ‘clicked’ and grabbed me for the final three movements. Will be interesting to compare Norrington’s reading with that of John Elliot Gardener on DGG Archiv.
Also picked up in the charity shop:
Respighi – ‘Pine of Rome, Fountains of Rome’ and Rossini/ Respighi – ‘Suite Rossinana’

New Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Charles Munch (Respighi)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Anatal Dorati (Rossini/Respighi)
Decca Phase 4 stereo, 444 106-2. ADD (1967/1977)
Found this enjoyable enough, but Respighi is not really my thing. Was put off by the Phase 4 Stereo banner as these are usually ‘sooped-up’ ‘gee whizz’ recordings designed to show off your system. But I have to admit I was impressed by the SQ and especially the width and depth of the sound stage.
Not sure if I will play it much though.
