if you put the topping into one of the analogue inputs the Sony converts it back to digital then decodes it again with its own DAC.

All its analogue inputs are converted to digital internally, even the phono stage. This is so you can use all the DSP functions it has.

So you could digitise your vinyl collection and burn them onto CDs? And maybe manipulate the eq? That might be fun if it were possible, or am I failing to get what this Sony is able to do?

you could use it to do that as it has an ADC but I don't think the EQ carries over to the recording.

I been waiting before saying anything as I wanted to listen to a lot of different music before giving my thoughts.

But what the hell.

It is different to the Philips pre/Topping DAC combo I will say that. A little cleaner, a little leaner.

Keith Richards 'Main Offender' which just sounded sublime with Philips/Topping loses the magic 'sweetness' in favour of a more forensic 'control room' sound. Not really sure whether I want that or not...probably not.

Main reason I got this other than it's just a classic piece of kit was the parametric EQ. I'm intending to use REW to measure the FR of my system but realised that if I did find it to be less than ideal (highly likely even though it does sound really good with all types of music) the only way I would be able to make any adjustments was the tone controls on the Philips. Which do have selectable bandwidth, but are still crude compared to digital PEQ.

So next stage will be to do the measuring then tinker with the PEQ and see if I can end up with something better than what I had.

Although not sure when I'm going to get round to downloading REW and learning to use it. Not even taken the mic out of the box yet!

Anyway if none of that works out think I might go back to Philips/Topping combo and relegate the Sony to the TV system.

Thanks - I did already read some tutorials but you know what it's like - what seems straightforward on paper isn't so easy when you actually come to do it :)

contemplated using that but decided it was too compllex for my meagre brain and went for the well regarded 'f**k it' approach ;)
