Yes I have thought for some time that record thickness could be a factor with VTF, I just haven't yet mustered the necessary bottle to start tinkering with it! But one day soon I will bite the bullet.

I don't think I can use the spikes instead of the pads as they are rather long, and would create too big an air gap (which should ideally be around 15mm), but I do have some other "spikes" which are actually blunt and are much shorter. I think they would work fine. I'll give the existing set up a few days with some familiar music, then make the change :)
