I also rate the MN bearing highly and wouldn't change it anyway, ditto the ETP platter. For me it's about cherry-picking the best 'bits' from a variety of different sources and combining them into one, in order to get the 'best of all worlds':)
That said, I'd happily use anything that Arthur made for a turntable, and be confident it would perform to the highest standard, as he really is a vinyl guru... The Techy is sounding simply stunning - best it ever has, with the addition of the APM and Houdini, and the awesome sounding Denon DL-103GL, which is arguably the best 103 I've ever heard.
I'd honestly put this T/T up against ANYTHING at ANY price and expect it never to be disgraced.

Surely the Aachromat APM kind of negates the need for an expensive platter?
My Achromat is bonded to my platter, so trying an APM version will not be easy.
Nah, not in my experience. The platter does something different to the mat, especially in terms of adding rotational mass, which on a D/D turntable is desirable. If I just had the original Techy platter on there, with the APM, it would undoubtedly sound worse.

I thought the APM was used with the technics platter and went on top of it. does it actually replace the platter completely? if you could post some pics of the APM it would be a great help if you don't mind.
As far as I'm aware it's not designed to replace the platter completely; it's simply an improved version of the existing Achromat, with a glass base, which provides better isolation. And as I've said, I don't have a Technics platter.
I'll see if I can post a pic of the mat tomorrow:)

I spoke to Matt of the Funk firm, and he tells me it is primarily designed to fit the Technics platter (which you don’t have ;)) to stop the platter ring.

Indeed, yes, primarily, but it was also recommended to me as an upgrade for the stock Achromat, which would also optimise the effect of the Houdini - and I can confirm that both are true!:)
Btw, mine is designed to fit the surface of a normal platter. In any case, the APM is a no-brainer upgrade on the stock achromat, for ALL turntables, if you can accommodate the extra 'thickness' and make the necessary adjustments to VTA.

Well, if you use an Achromat [yes/no?] then the APM will defo be an upgrade, no matter which platter it's sat on. You can never have too much effective isolation:)

I am not 100% sure that an achromat with a glass back will be any different to an achromat bonded to a glass platter, if I am honest.
Taking the old one off will not be easy, and hard to replace as I have heard they are discontinuing the 5mm version.

I think I last used it about 15 years ago, just to see if it worked and it did. I bought it in about 1987 from Tandy in Lord Street, Liverpool (don't look for it etc).
It was about £70 so a lot of money back then. In typical Tandy style it didn't come with headphones, you had to buy them separately.
Practically never used it. I bet it doesn't have even 20 hours on the heads.
Lol - the Realistic brand was quality, and represented quite a few products. Some of the speakers were also pretty good. So do you have some headphones you can plug into it? If so, I'll make you up a couple of tapes, just for a larf!:D
Btw, do you remember Beaver Hi-Fi in Liverpool? I used to go there in the early-to-mid 2000s. Del's mum knew the owners.
