Anthony Mann was Preston Sturges assistant on the film. He recalled, "I'd stage a scene and he'd tell me how lousy it was. Then I watched the editing, and I was able to gradually build up knowledge. Preston insisted I make a film as soon as possible. He said it's better to have done something bad than to have done nothing."
Joel McCrea credited Preston Sturges with instilling confidence and treating him as if he were a bigger star than Clark Gable. "I have to say the money I got for it was unnecessary," McCrea said later in life. "I don't know any other director where I had so much fun. I really felt like I'd do it for nothing."
NAACP Secretary Walter White wrote a letter to Preston Sturges congratulating him for his "dignified and decent treatment of Negroes in this film.
Paramount purchased Preston Sturges's script for this movie for $6,000 (adjusted for inflation: approximately $105,000 in 2019).
Mysterious Island, 1961..

Producer Charles H. Schneer claimed that he chose this story after reading an article stating that Jules Verne's "Mysterious Island" was the most-looked-at book at public libraries.
The film was green-lit partially because Swiss Family Robinson (1960) was a huge success.
The opening scenes at the Confederate prison camp were shot in England and the exteriors were shot at Shepperton Square.
A real Brown crab was disemboweled, dismembered, cleaned and fitted with an internal armature for Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion animation of the giant crab. Additional live crabs were used for some of the "facial" close-ups, then later cooked for a crew dinner.

You certainly couldn't get that much work done for $6m these days, and the show has dated quite a bit. But there was one thing that kept me watching... I'd forgotten what a cutie Lindsay Wagner was.
