well my speakers have a number designation; ie, mk1, but amp has a name, as in 'classic remix'; a pretty crap name tbh and not especially worthy of italian style.:D
but oppos are all numbers i think. my cd/bray player being a 103d

The Japanese can usually be relied on for a good designation. Unless you stray into valve amps or MC cartridges.

The business of giving audio gear names started with the Americans. I think (the sadly late) James Bongiorno started it with his company 'The Great American Sound' (known to everyone as the 'GAS company') and amplifier designs called "Ampzilla" and "Son of Ampzilla". :)

This then spawned other less modest names for audio gear, such as the late Tom Fletcher's arm: "The Arm" (though I think it might have also had an number: MDC-800) for example, and William Firebaugh's "The Well-Tempered Arm". There were turntables modestly titled "The Source".

I have an American-sourced arm (though it is made in Japan), an Infinity "Black Widow". (Kept because it has the lowest effective mass of any arm I have seen: 3g)

What year was that? The first British one I'm aware of was Musical Fidelity's "The Pre Amp" in the early 80s although there's probably some earlier example I haven't thought of.
