"An extravagant B-movie from France with all the right matinee-adventure ingredients.
This is a grandiose monster movie from France that delivers the perfect blend of slick style and unsophisticated, gothic melodrama to make it one of the most appealing film fantasies in a long while. The international success of the film is not hard to understand; it's exhilarating in the same way that the old Hammer horror films were in their heyday. Everything about this elaborate movie is terrifically tacky, particularly the stunning production design. It's like seeing those artless, wilderness paintings containing hidden animal images come to life. The characters come off as if they were lifted right off of some garish paperback romance-novel cover. Best of all, the film has some nifty flourishes of sex and violence sadly missing from the current spate of half-baked, PG-13 Hollywood product. While some seem to be complaining of one martial-arts fight too many, faulty creature effects or simple-minded plotting; in this case, it's like bitching about KING KONG being over the top. This is a contemporary B-movie (albeit an expensive, subtitled one) for those who appreciate a good time at the movies. It delivers the kind of satisfaction audiences used to get seeing the work of Mario Bava or Ray Harryhausen; and that's saying a lot!"

All I will say is it's 'an entertainment': loosely based on historical events, the film is padded out with much martial art scenes, a sprinkling of sex and nudity, but some stunning location sets. Can't decide whether to keep this disc or not.

No Country for Old Men, 2007.. According to a January 2018 article in Business Insider, a group of psychiatrists studied 400 movies and identified 126 psychopathic characters. They chose Javier Bardem's portrayal of Anton Chigurh as the most clinically accurate portrayal of a psychopath.

The title is part of the first line from William Butler Yeats' poem "Sailing to Byzantium." The full line is, "That is no country for old men." The poem is about an old man, and as he nears death, he wonders what it might be like in the afterlife. This theme is somewhat explored by the world of weary Sheriff Bell, who ponders what his life will be like after he leaves his "life" as a lawman.

Tommy Lee Jones and Harrison Ford star in...

Tommy Lee Jones reportedly told Joe Pantoliano, "It's not like anyone is going to win any awards for this film." However, the movie was eventually nominated for 7 Academy Awards and 3 Golden Globes, with Jones himself ironically winning both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this film. Harrison Ford was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor, but lost to Tom Hanks for his performance in Philadelphia (1993).

John le Carré's novel was based on the uncovering, during the 1950s and 1960s, of the Cambridge Five traitors, who were K.G.B. moles working within the S.I.S. It is the first book in le Carré's Karla, or Quest for Karla trilogy, the second and third parts being The Honourable Schoolboy (1977) and Smiley's People (1979).

Gary Oldman went to Old Focals, an eyeglass store in Pasadena, California, to search for the right glasses to fit George Smiley: "Glasses are funny things. For Smiley, they're iconic. It's like Bond's Aston Martin or vodka martini." Oldman tried on hundreds of glass frames before he found the appropriate ones.

In the novel, Jim Prideaux's (Mark Strong's) mission took place in Czechoslovakia. In this film, the mission takes place in Hungary. The change in location was because Hungary offers a twenty percent tax reduction for film productions.

Not a bad film: I have a copy, but I prefer the BBC version with Alec Guiness.

That's not to say Gary Oldman doesn't play Smiley well, he does - it's just that the set of MI6's "Circus" doesn't convince.

Stir Crazy (1980)

Prior to filming, Arizona State Prison Warden Robert Raines had tried to organize a rodeo for 2 years. The biggest obstacle was the cost of constructing an arena, complete with grandstand, stables, and livestock chutes. When Columbia Pictures inquired about renting the prison for a film shoot, he saw a way to realize his dream. If security could be maintained, the prison was available for a fee which matched the budget for the new rodeo grounds. Raines said, "There was a fringe benefit we didn't anticipate. Morale in the prison was never higher. Some 350 inmates signed on as extras, playing themselves, and the rest, even the most notorious troublemakers, stayed on their best behavior. There were simply no incidents."

Blazing Saddles (1974)

In the DVD commentary, Mel Brooks said that the working title for the film was "Tex X," as a reference to black Muslim leader Malcolm X. It was then switched to "Black Bart," then to "The Purple Sage." In either case, neither he nor the other writers thought those were great titles. Brooks says that one morning he was taking a shower and the words "Blazing Saddles" suddenly popped into his head. When he got out of the shower, he pitched the title to his wife, the late Anne Bancroft, who liked the idea, and that's how the movie ended up with its title.


Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little quickly became friends on-set. Since Little was a Broadway actor, Wilder would give him pointers for acting in front of the cameras.
