Cary Guffey's (the little boy)performances were so good that they only had to do one or two takes of each shot he was in. He became known as "One-Take Cary" on the set, and director Steven Spielberg had a T-shirt printed up for him with the phrase written on it.
The John Williams score was created before the film was edited. Steven Spielberg edited the film to match the music, a reverse of what is usually done in the film scoring process. Both Spielberg and Williams felt that it ultimately gave the film a lyrical feel.
The words that the crowd in India chants are "Aaya Re! Aaya," which means "He has come" in Hindi.
Don't forget, the movie 'Bloodbath at The House of Death' 1984 is on Making Movies TV at 11.05 tonight. You just know it's going to be classy with a name like that! :D

Richard Jordan later admitted he decided to overplay his part because he thought the movie was going to flop, and if anybody paid to see it then it would only be for the two stars. He also said he felt that Katharine Hepburn was about to die at any minute - ironically, she outlived him by a decade.
Katharine Hepburn was bemused by co-star John Wayne's tendency to argue with everybody, especially the director, during filming. At the party to celebrate the last day of filming she told him, "I'm glad I didn't know you when you had two lungs, you must have been a real bastard. Losing a hip has mellowed me, but you!"
Katharine Hepburn was actually very admiring of John Wayne despite opposing political beliefs. She later said she saw a lot of Spencer Tracy's integrity in The Duke and was quite keen to find a project on which they could work together.
John Wayne was greatly impressed by Katharine Hepburn's wilful nature. He recalled, "You should have seen her up on those mountain locations. She can't ride a hobby horse. But she climbed right up on those horses and gave 'em hell. We had a great girl stunt rider for her, but Kate said, 'She doesn't sit as straight in the saddle as I do.'"

To simulate a monster attacking the horse, fake tentacles were wrapped around the horse. The movement of the tentacles was achieved by an inner mechanism which was operated manually. The horse was not at all frightened by this. The horse lay down, which he was trained to do. Collapsible stirrups were used to protect the horse. A veterinarian sedated the horse briefly and an American Humane Associate representative was present at all times. A prop of a fake horse flank was used where the monster bites into the horse.
The very first scene filmed on day one of shooting is the moment towards the beginning where Val says "that means it's a girl" and drives off-road to meet Rhonda. On the first take, the truck hit a dirt mound too hard and caused damage to the vehicle's front end, also stalling it out in the process. It took several hours to get the vehicle running for the second take (which was the take used in the film), and scenes showing the truck couldn't show the full front side until it was fixed later in production.

In the scenes where Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood climb the steep fortress walls, Burton moves with ease, while Eastwood is clearly working hard physically. This was due to the fact that Burton, who was a hard-drinker, a chain smoker, and out-of-shape by that point, chose to ride a crane (made invisible by special effects) up the wall, whereas the health-conscious Eastwood was actually climbing the wall. Burton had already been diagnosed with bursitis, possibly aggravated by faulty treatment, arthritis and dermatitis.

In an interview, Bette Midler mentioned that all three main cast members wanted to make a sequel, but the studio was not agreeable, as they viewed the success of this movie as a "fluke". Midler also said that just before the movie opened, she was told it would not do very well because this movie was competing against action movies with male stars such as Bruce Willis. This movie opened at number one and out-grossed those action movies.
When the three ladies meet after the funeral, they are talking about Elise's (Goldie Hawn) plastic surgery. Brenda asks Elise, "Did you just have a little bit or the whole enchilada?" This line was originally "I got the whole Ivana", but was changed once Ivana Trump was cast in a cameo.
Out of all of the actresses who play wives in this movie, Diane Keaton is the only one to have never been married. Bette Midler is still married to her first husband since 1984, making Goldie Hawn the only divorcée in real life.
