I would like to use an un-powered hdd straight into my RPI but when i plug it in it just sort of spins up then stops then spins again, i guess i need to tweak the config.txt as you have done but don't know how to, could you talk me through how to do this?

Grant already replied you, but I wanted to ask you do you know how to use putty and do you use Windows or Mac. If you aren't familiar with putty the explanation I've made in another forum will not be sufficient and I can provide you more detailed info how to tweak config.txt.

A brief follow up on what Peter has said and the ref to his post at theaudiostandard forum. Once you have worked out how to connect to your RPi via SSH, you can log in as the "root" user with password "volumio" (unless your're not using Volumio).

Two points - (a) commands do not need to be prefixed by "sudo" , (b) the following single command will append the appropriate line of text to the "/boot/config.txt" file:

Then reboot your RPi either via the Volumio web interface, or via the command line:

Nice one Chris! Also goes without saying that you need a 2A supply and beware of poorly made micro USB power leads as they can drop too much voltage under load which will prevent the drive spinning up...

Thank you so much everyone - i have taken out the sd card and added the command line that you gave me and am now adding the files to the hdd, i will let you know how i get on.

Does anyone know if our IQ Audio Dac + cards can play DSD .dsf files?
