Back in the 1990s, before idiotic American business slang became normalized, we had a senior manager who was always 'Touching base.' Like 20 times a day.

Eventually someone who wasn't bothered about getting the sack pulled him up on it. In fairness, he did stop saying it.

Also in my last job we had a sales director who was always wanting to go 'Balls deep.'

Didn't matter what the subject was, he would always pipe up to say 'We need to get balls deep into this!'

He ended up getting sacked. Not for saying that, but it probably didn't help.

I must say “balls deep” has never been one I’ve encountered (in a business meeting!) Extra points for going balls deep and touching base at the same time, though!

Whilst doing a 'big shop' for groceries, my partner spotted a vintage gold necklace she has always wanted in a jewellers that had recently opened. We went in to enquire the price and found it was cheaper than I anticipated. Realising such an opportunity would be unlikely to re-occur, I bought it for her.

Little does she know that I could have bought a very good cartridge, or digital camera, or a laptop for what it cost. But then that's me!

You old romantic! Keeping your good lady happy is sometimes more important than toys for the boys.

Got a letter from HMRC telling me I've paid too much tax - £213 refund is due.

Time for a spending spree!

I always pay too much tax: been doing so for years now. I prefer it that way, as the return of the excess from HMRC in the autumn is always a welcome surprise.
And the refund is similar to what you will be receiving Martin. You can buy quite a lot of CDs with that sort of sum. :)

This is just a one off as I finished work before the end of the tax year, there won't be any more.

Might blow the £13 on CDs :)
